'Onzekerheden over het leven na de dood zijn van alle tijden, zo blijkt uit het boek Over de Styx, geschreven door Mark Pieters en Patrick de Rynk. Het is een inventarisatie van wat de Grieken en Romeinen dachten over de onderwereld a…an gene zijde van de doodsrivier de Styx, uitgebracht ter gelegenheid van de Boekenweek met het thema leven en dood. Het boek is na een beknopte inleiding alfabetisch geordend: van de Acheron, een grenswater van de onderwereld, tot Zieltje, het doodsbedgedicht van de Romeinse keizer Hadrianus. Alle lemma's zijn voorzien van uitleg en toepasselijke citaten uit de klassieke literatuur. Die encyclopedische opsomming is, zou je kunnen denken, slechts het materiaal voor een écht boek, een studie die alles uitlegt. Maar omdat het onderwerp per definitie bestaat uit onzekerheid en verwarring, zou zo'n beschouwing onvermijdelijk bestaan uit een bijna onleesbare opsomming van nuances, enerzijdsen, niettemins en anderzijdsen. Over de Styx is heel goed van a tot z te lezen. De bekende, maar ook de vele onbekende citaten, vaak in opvallend fraaie vertalingen, noden via de uitvoerige bibliografie tot verder lezen in de Griekse en Romeinse literatuur. Het interessantst zijn de verhalen over mensen die afdaalden naar de onderwereld en weer terugkwamen. Zoals Odysseus, die in de onderwereld een ontmoeting had met Achilles. De Homerische held van Troje was ooit ondergedompeld in de Styx om onsterfelijk te zijn, maar werd vastgehouden bij zijn hiel, de kwetsbare plek die hem uiteindelijk fataal werd. De gedode Achilles is in de onderwereld dan wel niet helemaal dood, maar klaagt zijn nood: 'Liever deed ik op aarde als dagloner dienst bij een vreemde [.] dan over alle doden en schimmen als koning te heersen.' En in het licht of de schaduw ervan lees ik gelijksoortige stukken bij Lucretius, bij Ovidius ook, maar evenzeer bij Chaucer, in de lyriek van Hadewych, bij Gorter en in de omkering van dat alles die het begin van Eliots 'The Waste Land' te zien geeft.'
