Für die Formulierung einer europäischen Identität bot in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der Kalte Krieg die nötigen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Europäische Gemeinschaft grenzte sich gegen die Ostblockstaaten ab und bezog unter anderem daraus ihre Identität.
