"A New Theory (that) Revolutionized Organic Chemistry"--Michael Sutton, "A Forgotten Triumph" in ChemistryWorld online. [++] "Sur une nouvelle Théorie cimique. (Note présentée par M.Dumas) (On a New Chemical Theory")." AND "Reserches sur l'acide salicylique" BOT…H Paris, Mallet-Bachelier, 1858. In: Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences, volume 46, No 23 and No 24, pp1079-1122 and 1121-1173 in two full issues with Couper's papers on pp. 1107-1110 and the bigger paper on 1157-1160. Extracted without wrappers from a larger volume nice, tidy, crisp copy. The New Theory of Chemistry paper is a foundation work introducing key concepts in developing orgchem, also introducing the dotted line and lines to represent the new concept of bonds--it was "a new theory that revolutionized organic chemistry"--Michael Sutton, "A Forgotten Triumph" in ChemistryWorld online. [++] "After moving to Paris in August 1856, Couper (1831 -1892) engaged in independent research in the laboratory of Charles Adolphe Wurtz. His first publication on the bromination of benzene appeared in August 1857. His other experimental paper, on salicylic acid, was published in 1858. Early in 1858 Couper asked Wurtz to have presented before the French Academy of Sciences a paper entitled "On a New Chemical Theory" [the paper offered here]. Wurtz, not a member of the Academy, procrastinated before finding someone to present it. In the intervening period Kekulé s paper, dated 19 May 1858, appeared in Liebig's Annalen. Couper's paper on essentially the same topic was presented to the French Academy by J. B. A. Dumas in June and was published soon thereafter. Kekulé attacked the paper almost immediately, claiming priority and greater significance for his own work. He also questioned Couper's researches on salicylic acid and, since Couper never answered, his name was long forgotten. Couper complained to Wurtz about the delay in presenting his paper and was asked to leave the laboratory. He returned to Scotland in the fall of 1858 and accepted a position as second laboratory assistant to Lyon Playfair, professor of chemistry at Edinburgh University. Soon after beginning his duties he suffered a mental breakdown, underwent treatment, apparently recovered, and went on a fishing expedition, during which, reportedly due to extended exposure to the sun, his illness returned. He never fully recovered and lived in retirement for the remaining thirty-four years of his life."--"Couper, Archibald Scott." Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online, vol. 3, Charles Scribner's Sons, 2008, pp. 448-450 (paper version). [++] A longer version (20pp) of this paper would appear shortly after this publication (still in 1858) in the Annales de Chimie et de Physique. [++] "In 1858 August Kekulé (1829 1896) and Archibald Scott Couper (1831 1892), two young men from different backgrounds, independently recognized that carbon atoms can link directly to one another to form carbon chains. This finding explained the very multiplicity of carbon compounds that had been puzzling chemists. The discovery by these two scientists depended on Kekulé s theory, proposed in 1857, that carbon is tetravalent, valence being defined at the time as the combining capacity of atoms of the various elements. Couper, in his paper [offered here] and in another paper on salicylic acid that appeared earlier in 1858 [also offered here] indicated valence bonds as straight lines linking the symbols for the elements, which is still the practice in most modern structural diagrams." --Science History Institute online [++] (In 1858) Couper publishes symbolic formulae for chemical compounds, illustrating the linking of constituent atoms by dotted lines connecting the respective atomic symbols. Although the dotted lines are later replaced by solid lines, the general scheme gains gradual acceptance."--Claire Parkinson, Breakthroughs, p. 350.

First appearance of this milestone announcement in organic chemistry - a longer…memoir was published in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique" later in the same year, 1858 - in which, independently of Kekulé, Couper introduces the CONCEPT OF BONDS (represented as a dash or a dotted line) in chemistry and also observes the very importent fact, that carbon atoms forms the backbone of organic compounds."It was not till 1858 that a satisfactory theory of molecular constitution was advanced, simultaneously and endependently, by thwo young chemists, Friedrich August Kekulé and Archibald Scott Couper. The theory of molecular constitution put foreward.by Couper and Kekulé rested on two main postulates, the quadriivalency of carbon.and the capacity of the carbon atom for mutual linking or combining together to form a carbon "chain". By this hypothesis of the mutual linking together of carbon atoms - which waslater confirmed by experiment - it was possible to explain the formation of organic compounds containing a large number of carbon atoms. On the foundation of their postulates two postulates, moreover, (they) showed how the molecular constitution or mutual linking together of the atoms of a compound could be represented diagrammatically and the relstions between different compounds made readily intelligible. Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. In Volume 52, FIRST EDITION OF "THE BEGINNING OF BACTERIOLOGY AS A MODERN SCIENCE," Louis Pasteur and "the first demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific living micro-organism (Garrison-Morton 2472). In Volume 53, Archibald Scott Couper's paper is a seminal work…in organic chemistry. Three volumes bound as one. PASTEUR: At the request of a vintner from the north of France, Pasteur began to examine why alcohol becomes contaminated with undesirable substances during fermentation. Pasteur saw fermentation as a biological process and soon demonstrated that each sort of fermentation is linked to the existence of a specific microorganism or ferment -- a living being that can be studied by cultivation in an appropriate, sterile medium. This insight is the fundamental basis of microbiology, and it delivered the fatal blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation, the theory held for twenty centuries that life could arise spontaneously in organic materials. "Pasteur's first paper on fermentation contains most of the central theoretical and methodological features of his biological theory of fermentation, in particular the concept of fermentation as a product of the growth of yeast, the idea that air is a source of microscopic yeasts and other micro-organisms, and the notion of specificity, in which each fermentation could be traced to a specific micro-organism" (Dibner, Heralds 198). This paper went through near simultaneous publication in Annales de chimie et de physique, offered here, the Memoires de la Societe des Sciences, de l'Agriculture et des Arts and a much-abridged version that appeared in Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences in 1857. COUPER: Couper was one of the founders of modern structural chemistry and the first chemist to use modern structural formulae. In this paper, Couper recognized that carbon atoms can link to each other to form chains. Prior to this thinking, it was believed that molecules could only have one central atom. Couper's idea made it much easier to explain the multitude of organic compounds that were being discovered. "The significance of Couper's new theory resides in two assertions. The first was that the combining power of carbon (later known as its valency) was normally four. Couper was aware that carbon could sometimes exhibit a combining power of two, for example in carbon monoxide. Couper's second and more radical assertion was that carbon could 'enter into chemical union with itself' - its atoms joining together in long chains" (ibid., 47). REFERENCES: Garrison-Morton 2472; Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science, 82,;Dibner, Heralds 198. CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: Victor Masson.
