Nato dal vasto e pluriennale progetto di censimento e studio della scultura tra XIII e XVI secolo nell'area delle Alpi occidentali, il volume fa da catalogo alle sei esposizioni temporanee in…centrate sul culto dei santi nell'antico ducato di Savoia, corrispondente a territori italiani, svizzeri e francesi, che si terranno nell'estate 2013 ad Aosta, Susa, Annecy, Chambéry, Sion e Ginevra. Ciascuna mostra illustra la produzione di statue di santi e le specifiche devozioni mettendo in rilievo le differenze locali e analizzando sia il contesto artistico e le pratiche religiose, sia l'iconografia e la simbologia legata agli attributi - che nel caso dei santi più venerati registra notevoli varianti - attraverso il confronto con dipinti, oreficerie e tessuti. Il Musée-Château di Annecy, in collaborazione col Museo Civico d'Arte Antica di Torino, esamina il ruolo di Sant'Antonio abate come taumaturgo, in relazione alla fondazione di enti ospedalieri sui due versanti alpini; il Museo del Tesoro della cattedrale di Aosta illustra il culto di santi "locali" come San Grato e Sant'Orso; il Museo Diocesano di Susa espone materiali sui santi legati ai passi alpini e al tema del transito e del viaggio (San Gottardo, San Bernardo, San Cristoforo); il Musée Cantonal d'Histoire di Sion indaga il rapporto tra devozione e potere rispetto al culto di San Maurizio e San Teodulo.
