Condizione: Trade paperback, Fine. New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2010. Trade paperback, Fine, 263 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason C. Eckhardt "It is well known that H. P. Lovecraft was virtually ignored by the mainstream literary community in his time, being known only in the tiny worlds of amateur journalism and fantasy fandom. And yet, it is surprising how much comment on Lovecraft appeared in various venues, both obscure and prominent, in his own time and just shortly after his early death in 1937. This volume gathers, for the first time, a wide array of early criticism of Lovecraft, including poignant obituaries by such friends as Walter J. Coates and Hyman Bradofsky; early attempts to analyze Lovecraft's work by such writers as Rheinhart Kleiner and Frank Belknap Long; voluminous discussions of Lovecraft's tales in the letter columns of Weird Tales and Astounding Stories; an abundant selection of criticism from the fan world of the 1930s and 1940s, including articles by August Derleth, P. Schuyler Miller, and Francis T. Laney; and reviews of the first Arkham House books of Lovecraft's work by Will Cuppy, T. O. Mabbott, Vincent Starrett, William Rose Benét, and many others.". Jason C. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Noted Lovecraftian scholar S. T. Joshi has authored a criticism of Lovecraftian and Cthulhu Mythos fiction, beginning with the stories by H.P. Lovecraft that gave birth to the entities, locales, books, and other plot devices that have come to be known as the 'Cthulhu Mythos'. Joshi further details the works of August Derleth, Frank Belknap Long, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Donald Wandrei, Robert Bloch, Fritz Leiber and other. Joshi then expounds upon the 'Derleth Mythos', and its influence on subsequent Lovecraftian fiction. Joshi then explores a new generations of Mythos writers and their respective expansion of the Cthulhu Mythos, including Richard L. Tierney, Gary Myers, Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell, Michael Shea, Walter C. DeBill Jr. and others. Finally, Joshi reviews some of the more modern authors who have taken up the Lovecraftian mantle: Jeffrey Thomas, Stanley C. Sargent, Wilum H. Pugmire, Thomas Ligotti, Joseph C. Pulver and many others. Jason C. Eckhardt (illustratore).…

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition, 3rd Printing. pp. xii, 708. $29.95. Third printing, September 2004, Necronomicon Press, Warwick, Rhode Island. Twenty years after the publication of the first published biography by L. Sprague Decamp in 1975, Marc Michaud's Necronomicon Press published an abridged version of Joshi's 500,000+ word manuscript. Lovecraft: A Life hit the proverbial bookshelves in October 1996 and was buoyed by a review by Joyce Carol Oates in the New York Review of Books. "S.T. Joshi's meticulously researched H.P. Lovecraft: A Life suggests that Lovecraft, for all his championing of independent thinking, was much in thrall to his widowed, ailing mother Susie, who seems to have made of her son's personal appearance (tall, gaunt, with a long, prognathous jaw and frequently blemished skin) an image of moral degeneracy. A neighbor recounts that "Mrs. Lovecraft talked continuously of her son who was so hideous that he hid from everyone and did not like to walk upon the streets where people would gaze at him," a statement the neighbor considered "exaggerated." (Mrs. Lovecraft was believed not to have been told the cause of her husband's syphilitic dementia and death, and associated Lovecraft with his father. Yet it must have been she who encouraged her son to wear his deceased father's clothes as a young man.) It would not be until Mrs. Lovecraft died while institutionalized, when Lovecraft was thirty-one years old, that he would try to free himself, at least sporadically, from his housebound, claustrophobic existence." -Joyce Carol Oats. New York Review of Books, October 31, 1996 The book appeared in two states: a signed limited hardcover edition (250 copies) and a trade paperback edition. The limited edition sold out in a matter of days, leaving disappointed a large number of fans and collectors alike. NecroPress underestimated the demand for the limited edition. In their defense, the impact of Oates' review could not have been predicted. The press had not been in the business of providing advance review copies to a critic of her importance. This copy of the third printing is in very good condition. Is shows some shelf wear with light bumping to corners and rubbing to edges. Clean within and without. Jason C. Eckhardt (illustratore).…
