High numbers of lectins are found in many kinds of marine invertebrates such as tunicates, echinoderms, arthropods, echiuroid and annelids, mollusk, and corals for example. Lectins have found multiple applications in biological research, both as agents and tools. As evidenced from numerous reports, lectins could be used as potential anti-insect, antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer agents. Lectins were found to distinguish between various blood types by specifically agglutinating blood cells. This unique property of lectins prompted the early investigations on the antigens involved in the ABO blood group system. Lectins are used in cancer biomarker discovery research. For the innate immune system of marine invertebrates, lectins effectively function that serve to prevent and limit invading microorganisms or its pathogens. We also evaluated the effect of the lectin from sea hare eggs for cell proliferation of lymphoma cells and determined the kinetics against the glycoprotein recognized by the lectin using surface plasmon resonance. 112 pp. Englisch.…

This has led to our interest in the search for a synthesis of new nucleoside molecule i.e., thymidine analogues that may be screened for broad-spectrum biological activity. Thymidine analogues, containing heterocyclic systems, are known to possess various therapeutic activities for the treatment of human diseases. Thymidine analogues such as telbibudine (thymidine -L-nucleoside analogue), AZT (3 -azido-2 ,3 -dideoxythymidine), stavudine, zalcitabine are being used as antiviral, and HIV, drugs. In our present investigation, four new series of nucleoside derivatives were synthesized from thymidine (1) via only two-step reactions by direct acylation method and furnished the 5 -O-acyl thymidine derivatives in good yields. To obtain newer products for antimicrobial evaluation studies, the 5 -O-thymidine derivatives were further transformed into two series of 2 ,3 -di-O-acyl derivatives (scheme 1-4) containing a wide variety of functionalities in a single molecular framework. 148 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Methyl _-D-glucopyranoside was easily prepared by the treatment of D-glucose with anhydrous methyl alcohol in the presence of hydrogen chloride at freezing temperature. Then N-acetylsulfanilylation of methyl _-D-glucopyranoside has been carried out by the direct method and afforded the 6-O-N-acetylsulfanilyl derivative in an excellent yield. In order to obtain newer products, the 6-O-N-acetylsulfanilyl derivative was further transformed into a series of 2,3,4-tri-O-acyl derivatives containing a wide variety of functionalities in a single molecular framework. The chemical structures of the newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by FTIR, Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental and physicochemical properties analysis. All the newly synthesized D-glucose derivatives were tested for their in vitro antibacterial activity against some human pathogenic bacterial strains. The study revealed that a good number of compounds exhibited promising antibacterial activities. It is expected that the acylated derivatives of D-glucose may be considered as a potential source for developing new and better antibacterial agents against a number of pathogenic organisms. 132 pp. Englisch.…
