Purnell's Treasury of Enchanted Tales - Retold by Jane Carruth (1978 First Edition, Hardcover with Dust Jacket) Publisher: Purnell Books, Maidenhead, Berkshire (Littlehampton Book Services Ltd) Publication Date: 1978 ISBN/SBN: 0361042442 / 9780361042444 Format: Large 8vo hardcover, 224 pages, profusely illustrated in full colour Condition: Book Near Fine / Dust Jacket Very Good A beautiful copy of this classic children's treasury. The book is in near fine condition: bright blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover are clean and sharp, with only the slightest bumping to corners. Binding is tight and square. Pages are clean, bright, and free of inscriptions, foxing, or significant marks. Endpapers and text block show minimal age-toning consistent with a 1978 printing. The dust jacket is very good: vibrant and complete with light edge wear, minor rubbing at spine ends and corners, and a couple of short closed tears (neatly repaired with archival tape on the reverse). No major chips or loss. The jacket has been price-clipped (£3.95 net in UK only, as per the flap). Overall, a very attractive example that displays handsomely. Decorative blue-bordered title pages, contents, and charming red line-drawn endpapers complete the enchanting presentation. About the Author Jane Carruth (active mid-20th century) was a prolific British author, editor, and reteller of children's classics. She began her career as a newspaper reporter before becoming a teacher and then focusing on publishing. Carruth specialised in adapting fairy tales, nursery stories, and literary classics (including works like Alice in Wonderland) for young readers. Her retellings are noted for their freshness, accessibility, and ability to appeal to both children and adults who cherish childhood favourites. She worked closely with major publishers like Purnell to produce high-quality illustrated treasuries. This 1978 Purnell edition is a standout volume in the "Treasury" series—larger format, lavishly illustrated, and representative of the golden age of British children's publishing. A wonderful gift or addition to any fairy tale collection. Mary Dinsdale, G. & S. Tourret, Donald Harley, Gerry Embleton (illustratore).…
