Robinson, and J. Edwards, London and edited by Mary Berry, with a substantial new introduction by Peter Sabor. From the introduction: "This facsímile edition of the Works of 1798 reveals the range of Walpole's oeuvre. Walpole as historian, dramatist, poet, essayist, and literary critic remains a shadowy being, in contrast to the familiar figure of Walpole as novelist, correspondent and writer of political memoirs. Faced with the bulk of the collection and a short deadline, Charles Burney complained, at the outset of his review, that "far from having been able, as yet, to enter on a critical discussion of the merit of the several articles contained in this very interesting publication, we have scarcely had leisure enough to cut open the leaves of the first volume" (July 1798, p. 323).
