Slipcase edged in matching cowhide over green paper boards. Original covers bound in. Binding signed [Georges] Leroux, 1995. Spine a little sunned, else fine. One of 253 copies printed. Illustrated with ten collotype illustrations by Jean Dubuffet. The fifth and final collection of poems by the American painter and poet, widow of Yves Tanguy. The binding is a late, subtle masterpiece by the eminent Georges Leroux, who was long drawn to the surrealist texts- a meditation on the book as well as an aesthetic object. In 1990, the Bibliothèque Nationale mounted an exhibition of Leroux's bindings, the first exhibition ever organized for a living binder.…

Poèmes et 19 illustrations de Kay di San Faustino [Kay Sage] dont 1 aquarelle originale en frontispice. Un des 50 premiers exemplaires sur japon (n° 17), signé. Seul le tirage de tête comporte l?aquarelle originale signée. Envoi signé : « À André Marchand, avec mon estime et avec mon amitié. K. di San Faustino ». Née dans une famille américaine très aisée, Kay Sage voyage beaucoup avec sa mère, notamment en Italie. Elle y reste une dizaine d'années et épouse en 1925 le prince Ranieri di San Faustino - un mariage malheureux qui l'éloigne de la peinture. Elle se réfugie à Milan, où elle reprend des cours de peinture, expose ses premières toiles, de facture abstraite, puis au Salon des Indépendants à Paris, présentée par la galerie Wildenstein, où elle se fait remarquer d'André Breton et d'Yves Tanguy, dont elle devient la maîtresse. Repartie aux États-Unis au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle s'occupe de faire venir nombre d'artistes restés en France, hébergeant à Greenwich Village Breton et Tanguy qu'elle épouse en 1940. Le couple s'installe à Woodbury, dans le Connecticut, à partir de 1941, dans deux ateliers contigus. Non loin d'eux se trouvent aussi les Calder et les Masson. En 1955, Yves Tanguy meurt d'une hémorragie cérébrale. Très affectée par ce décès brutal, Kay Sage délaisse peu à peu la peinture ; elle se suicide le 8 janvier 1963, quelques jours avant la parution du catalogue raisonné d'Yves Tanguy qu'elle aura mené à terme. Piove in giardino est son premier livre, entrepris à la fin de sa période milanaise, qu'elle dédie à son petit-neveu par alliance. André Marchand l'a sans doute rencontré lors du Salon de 1937, l'un des premiers auxquels il participe. Il reçoit cette même année le prix Paul-Guillaume, destiné à distinguer le talent d'un jeune peintre. Installé à Paris rue Campagne-Première, il est en 1943 l'un des fondateurs du Salon de mai qui s'ouvre pour la première fois en 1945 et y participera durant vingt ans. Ce peintre et lithographe de l'École de Paris fut un proche de Tal-Coat et Bazaine. Très rare sur japon - les seuls à contenir une aquarelle originale en tête. Quelques traces et décolorations du cartonnage, sinon intérieur parfait.…
