Diverse topics (24-29) -- Epilogue: life in Christ (30) -- `After reading the sermons contained in Migne, volumes 38 and 39, and those in Morin's text--a total of somewhat more than 500--I found about 60 that seemed particularly persuasive, instructive, beautiful, or memorable. From these I selected 30 [PL 34 385 161 392 349 184 194 201 224, Mai 95, PL 360 183 348 150 241 1 364 10 300 81 374, Guelferb. 1, PL 22 73 43 273 274 355 340, Mai 126] that give as wide a representation as possible of Augustine's thought. Although the method of selection is naturally colored by my likes and dislikes, I believe I have done justice to every major topic covered within the sermons. Three of the sermons in this collection (2, 17, and 29 [PL 385 364 340]) are now attributed to St. Caesar of Arles (ca. 470-542). Their legitimacy in a collection of St. Augustine's sermons can be defended by the fact that St. Caesar, who was an heir to antiquity's liberal view of plagiarism, appropriated these sermons from St. Augustine, merely adding his own exordium or conclusion or changing a word here and there.' Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition of St. Augustine's Letters Saint Augustin (Augustinus, Aurelius). Epistolae, not after 1471. Strasburg. Johann Mentelin.Folio, (380 x 280 mm). 263 ff. (of 264, missing the last blank). 50 lines, double columns. Later pigskin backed oak boards in contemporary style, some scratches, wormholes to boards, but overall in great condition. A very clean and large copy, initials in red and blue, larger ones with penwork, some occasional foxing, pin holed sized worm holes specially to last leaves, else in impeccable condition. Editio princeps of Saint Augustin's influential collection of Letters, of significant historical and theological importance, instrumental in shaping the relationship between church and state and in arguing for a universal church against local particularism; his Letters are, along with the Civitate Dei and the Confessions (of which it later becomes a part of), the most important writings of Saint Augustine. The Letters provide insight into early Christian theology and the ecclesiastical controversies of his time, such as his debates against Manichaeism, Donatism, and Pelagianism. His theological ideas, particularly on topics like divine predestination and human freedom, have influenced both Roman Catholic and Protestant thought. Augustine's adaptation of Platonic philosophy to Christian doctrine has had a lasting impact on Western philosophy and theology, influencing figures like Anselm of Canterbury and Thomas Aquinas. Saint Augustin (354, Numidia - 430, Hippo) is one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and arguably the most influential Christian thinker after St. Paul, his "adaptation of classical thought to Christian teaching created a theological system of great power and lasting influence" (O'Donnell, J. "St. Augustine." Encyclopedia Britannica, November 9, 2024). The Letters were described by Mentelin as a work in which "the skill of human eloquence resounds, many difficult and obscure passages of sacred scripture are clearly explained, heresies and deviations from the right faith are crushed with the solid hammer of truth, rules for right living are set forth, virtues are demonstrated, and vices are justly reproved" (cf. BMC). Letters can be seen to be a companion volume to the Confessions which were printed by the same printer the previous year. In fact, in modern editions of the Confessions, the Letters are generally published together in the same volume. The first edition of the letters is very rare on the open market. We have only been able to locate two copies at auction in the last 100 years: the Friedlander copy which first came up at auction in 1964 then in 1981 and then finally at the Friedlander sale in 2001. The only other copy was the Duke of Sussex's which came up in 1960. The letters range over a period of forty-three years. The earliest was written in A.D. 386, the year before his conversion; the latest in A.D. 429, the year before his death, Augustine's letters were arranged by the Benedictine editors as far as possible in the order in which they were written, when it was known. BMC I, 55; GW 2905; Schorbach Mentelin 22; Goff A-1267; Hain 1966. 1967; Proctor 208. Provenance: from the Mariae Himmelfahrt monastery in Fürstenfeld, near contemporary inscription on title page: "Monasterij B[eatae] V[irginis] Mari[a]e in Fürstenfeldt"; Christie's 22/6/1983/3; private German private collection.…
