Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Written in 1159 and addressed to Thomas Becket, John of Salisbury's The Metalogicon presents -- and defends -- a thorough study of the liberal arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The very name "Metalogicon", a coinage by the author, brings together the Greek meta (on behalf of) and logicon (logic or logical studies). Thus, in naming his text, he also explained it. With this lucid treatise on education, John of Salisbury urges a thorough grounding in the arts of words (oral and written) and reasoning, as these topics are addressed in grammar and logic. Written more than nine hundred years ago, The Metalogicon still possesses an invigorating originality that invites readers to refresh themselves at the sources of Western learning. Presents - and defends - a study of the liberal arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. This title urges a grounding in the arts of words (oral and written) and reasoning, as these topics are addressed in grammar and logic. Pamphlet. [2], 9 p. (closely set.in quarto format); 20.5 cm. `It is hard, at least on first impressions, to avoid a feeling of disappointment at the apparent contrast between Isaiah, Amos, Jeremiah and other OT giants and the showing put up by the christian prophets strictly so-called. This is, of course, partly because we have, under the influence of 19th century criticism, a very inflated idea of what the OT prophets were actually like as human figures. We forget too how very odd some of the prohets were -- quite as odd as anything thrown up by African enthusi- astic sects in our own time: Ezekiel lying on his side for months on end or breaking out of his own house with pots and pans tied all over him, Isaiah walking naked for three years. And the biblical prophets were only a tiny minority.most prophets prophesied for money, like fortune-tellers. An objective view might see much less difference than we usually do between the prophets of the two covenants.' (6) -- `the OT prophets went wrong. notably in two respects. First, though they correctly saw the nation as sinful and worthy of judgment, they mostly saw that judgment as coming much sooner than in fact it did. The second point at which the OT prophets went astray was,as we saw, then they came to predict happiness for the righteous. At the individual level, which is where it really matters, there is no justice.' (7 f.) -- We can never stop at righteousness because we find that the doing of it inevitably involves us in something more, forgiveness, sacrificial love, suffering, the surrender of those rights which under righteousness are our own. Justice is possible only among men of goodwill.' Good, stapled, in orig. red on tan wrapper.

Paper Back. Condizione: New. This vigorous justification of the arts of reasoning and verbal expression will surely fortify modern proponents of classical education. John of Salisbury-English churchman, close friend of Thomas Becket, contemporary to Hugh of St. Victor-was no stranger to pedagogical controversy. (Indeed, the barbs directed at his chief adversary-an 'ignoramus' of 'bloated gluttony, inflated arrogance, evil lust'-make attacks by today's pundits appear tame.) John champions the liberal arts ('called liberal.because their object is to effect man's liberation, so that, freed from cares, he may devote himself to wisdom') and eloquently builds the case that logic, grammar, and rhetoric are the foundations of all learning. His most notable allies from antiquity are Plato, Cicero, and especially Aristotle, but he also draws on the Church Fathers and great masters of his day, including Peter Abelard. John prizes common sense, preferring instructors who elucidate their subject plainly (even Aristotle receives chiding for obfuscation), and he often displays a ready wit: 'All take pride in being logicians, not only those who have become engaged to the science with a few sweet pleasantries, but even those who have not yet made her acquaintance.' Long available in Latin, this translation offers us the Metalogicon in English for the first time in its entirety-and not a moment too soon.
