This comprehensive peerage volume includes: A short history of each noble family in England, the names of peeresses of England, and a list of the sixteen representative peers of Scotland. A complete index for quick reference, Bound in elegant 18th-century full leather with gilt spine and border tooling, the volume is clean and well-preserved. Light rubbing to corners and edges, but the binding remains tight and attractive. Pages are clean and free from markings, with only light age toning. A valuable resource for historians, genealogists, and collectors of English nobility, with a unique inclusion of female titles and Scottish representation, making it broader than many contemporary works. A neat 18th-century ink inscription, EM Hycoff, appears on the inside cover, suggesting early ownership. While this individual has not yet been identified, the handwriting is consistent with contemporary use and adds to the historical character of this well-preserved peerage reference.

The Title Page continues "Their Mariages, Issue, Descennts, and immediate Ancestors; the Posts of Honour and Profit they hold in the Govenment; their Arms, Mottos, and Chief Seats. With an Index, Specifying the Time of their respective Creati…ons, and Summons to Parliament; the Titles of their Eldest Sons; their Rank, Precedence, &c." The author is Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) who also published volumes on the English and Scottish nobility and was an editor of the "State Trials." This is a disbound copy of the First Edition. The leather covers are present but loose, as is the first endpaper. The textblock is still attached to the leather spine, which has five raised bands and an embossed title. Clean text; very bright and fresh; 272 pages, with a six-page index and a one-page publisher's advert in the rear. The Title Page has an embossed chop from an English library. Pages 167 to 180 have dampstain and a crease. [Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer this as a binding copy, in need of restoration or repair. In this case, well worth a rebind.]. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

The front paste-down bears the armorial bookplate of Reverend Charles Lyttelton [1714-1768], Bishop of Carlisle and a noted antiquary. Mild rub to the margins; gilt on spine rubbed; splits at the edges of the spine [holding perfectly well]. A superior copy, very attrative. . First Edition. Full-Leather.
