Het woord drekpoëten zingt al een paar honderd jaren rond, het duikt met regelmaat op in de literatuurgeschiedenis en ik kom om de vijf jaar iemand tegen die er 'wel eens' van heeft gehoord. Toch blijft onduidelijk wat drekpoëten precies zijn en wie het zijn. Nooit werd er een afzonderlijke uitgave aan hun werk gewijd. 'Niet zonder komische kracht, doch van een soort om polderjongens te kittelen,' schrijft Kalff in zijn Geschiedenis der Nederlandsche letterkunde over de gedichten van zekere drekpoëet. Puntdichten 'waaronder enkele wel grappig zijn, maar niet zó grappig, dat het de moeite loont, daarvoor in dit vuilnisvat te gaan grasduinen,' heet het over een andere in De Ontwikkelingsgang der Nederlandsche Letterkunde van Te Winkel. Verdere typeringen zijn ´vuil´ en ´gemeen´, ´onbehoorlijk plat´ en ´walgelijk vies´. Werk van de straat of uit 'wat men tegenwoordig ene "revue" zou noemen'. Met gewassen mond worden vervolgens de auteurs geprezen met hoge morele standaard, de calvinistische en katholieke en sociaal-bewogen werken die onze geordende maatschappij tot eer kunnen strekken. 't Komt erop neer dat de drekpoëten onaangepast en oninpasbaar waren. in een kuise eeuw als de negentiende gingen ze kopje-onder en in een verzuilde eeuw als de twintigste dienden ze geen enkele tendens.
