Hardback. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition Thus. A.J. Liebling was one of the early writers at the "The New Yorker," and he stayed there for rest of his life. He began in 1935 and died in the saddle in 1963 at the age of 59. He was a reporter who wrote on a wide range of subjects, including politics and World War II, but his great loves were boxing and food. Not cooking food, mind you, but eating it. Not just any eating, either, but eating French food, and copious amounts of it. "Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris" is a slim volume of essays, mostly telling in retrospect about the year he spent as a student between 1926 and 1927 but including some of the time he was also in the city before and after the war. It's not quite right to say Liebling was a "starving student"his father bankrolled his year abroad too well for thatbut neither was he living a life of luxury. Nor was he really part of the "Lost Generation" typified by Hemingway and Fitzgeraldhe was too young to have served in World War I and had none of their mental anguish. Rather, as the "Washington Independent Review of Books" put it, "he simply went to Paris to feel good." He did that by eating massive meals under the guidance of friends, mostly the playwright Yves Mirande, whom he called "one of the last of the great round-the-clock gastronomes of France" and by involving himself with women of all kinds, from his fellow students to women of the streets. (He was particularly fond of a jolly Belgian named Angéle). He didn't need Mirande or even Angéle to have a good time, though. He could take care of himself by going to the theater, drinking wine, reading books, boxing and going to boutsin short, getting all he could from Paris. (Though not, notably, going to classes.) This being mostly tales of youth told by a man at the end of his life, there is, of course, a dose of nostalgia throughout, but Liebling always was a clear-eyed journalist, no matter his subject, so don't expect too much sentimentality. As a bonus, the introduction by James Salter could be the only one that earned its own review in the "New York Times" independent of the book it sets up. Critic Adam Sternbergh called it "magnificent" and a complete biography in eleven pages. "This hardly sounds a triumphant bugle call to gather and worship Liebling's life," he said about the introduction. "Yet it feels like an honest, clear-eyed and ultimately highly respectful and even celebratory assessment of Liebling's legacy." Our copy is by the Modern Library, which always produces editions that are joys to readjust the right size to hold and with clear, expressive print on quality paper and attractive dust jackets. The book is bound in light brown cloth. The contemporary Modern Library running torchbearer colophon is blind stamped in the center of the front cover; otherwise the boards have no decoration or lettering. The author, title, and publisher, with its emblem, are stamped in gold on the spine, which is in excellent condition. A very small hole is pierced through the cloth on the back cover. That, and some bumping at the bottom of the spine, is all that keeps this book from being listed as "fine." The binding is tight and square and the pages are clean and unmarked, with no tears or creases. The dust jacket is in similar condition, with a little shelf wear along the edges, particularly at the top of the spine and some slight creasing on the front flap and slight soiling on the inside of the back flap. The Modern Library provides a list of its current titles on the inside of the dust jacket as a bonus.

By enforcing the rules set by the Council, Warriors, like Thera, protect the peace between the Human Realm and the Realms of the Timeless, immortals with near-infinite powers, Angels, Demons, Gods, and Fae. During a battle in the Outer Realm, she is kidnapped by the God of Mischief and held as a prisoner of war at his palace. Though he doesn't reveal his motives, given the amount of time she spends in his bedchamber, it is clear this isn't strictly for political strategy. During her months in captivity, the two engage in a battle of wills and strategy to outwit the other, but suddenly, without explanation, he releases Thera. Back at the compound and surrounded by her closest friends, she still struggles to find a sense of normalcy. Even when she is cleared to return to training and missions, nothing can rid her mind of the ghost of him; even in sleep, his touch haunts her skin.
