Tali caratteristiche alimentano l'ipotesi che in queste comunità,… anche in presenza di una prolungata esperienza migratoria o di progetti d'insediamento definitivo, i legami con il paese d'origine siano stretti e rendano i migranti sospesi, appunto, tra due rive. L'attenzione degli autori si sofferma in particolare sulle migrazioni provenienti dall'Albania e dal Marocco, tra le nazioni che maggiormente hanno alimentato la presenza straniera sul nostro territorio e certamente le due più importanti tra quelle dell'area mediterranea. Tenendo presente questa chiave di lettura, diverse sono le prospettive con cui vengono studiate le due comunità. Procedendo per "zoomate" successive, si passa da una "visione panoramica", che comprende, oltre al nostro, i due paesi di provenienza dei flussi, ad inquadrature sempre più ristrette, ma più a fuoco e riferite ad alcune aree particolari (quelle globali di Roma e Milano, una realtà di medie dimensioni come il comune di Bari e le restanti province lombarde). Nella prima parte del volume si sfruttano le informazioni ufficiali disponibili sulle due rive del Mediterraneo per descrivere le peculiarità assunte dalle due correnti migratorie negli ultimi anni.
