Neuware - Très connu en Russie pour ses oeuvres poétiques, David Samoïlov (1920-1990) commença à écrire ses Mémoires à la fin des années soixante et y travaillait encore au moment de sa mort. L'originalité de cet ouvrage tient à la fois à la génération à laquelle appartint l'auteur et à son itinérai…re personnel. Sa génération est une génération perdue, comme la décrit l'auteur lui-même: des jeunes gens de talent qui passèrent entre les mailles du stalinisme dans les années trente, période au cours de laquelle ils commencèrent leurs études, et qui furent pris par la guerre avant de les achever. Aussi Samoïlov nous offre-t-il une image de la Russie stalinienne et de la guerre, qui sont vues de l'intérieur et d'' en bas '. Les portraits de ses camarades d'école, de jeunes écrivains débutants, de compagnons de combat, sont particulièrement attachants. Ni victime du régime, ni héros, ni dirigeant, il dresse un tableau proche des réalités sociales quotidiennes _ surtout urbaines, évidemment, mais aussi, parfois, rurales. L'itinéraire est aussi celui d'un intellectuel dont nous voyons la personnalité se former progressivement, et qui ne cesse de s'interroger sur le double rôle de l'intelligentsia et de la littérature dans un pays où elles servirent de contre-élite jusqu'à une période toute récente. A suivre l'évolution de ses conceptions littéraires et de ses vues politiques _ d'un certain conformisme teinté d'humanisme à une sévère et précoce condamnation du régime, car Samoïlov se distingua par de multiples prises de position en faveur de la dissidence _, à lire les portraits des écrivains et de diverses personnalités du monde culturel, on finit par voir se constituer un panorama tout en nuances et en richesse humaine du milieu littéraire et de la vie intellectuelle en URSS pendant les années de l'après-guerre. Ces Mémoires se distinguent par une grande exigence d'honnêteté et par un ton très personnel, un peu comme celui d'une conversation, qui leur confère un cachet d'authenticité supplémentaire.
