The book is a Jewish adaptation of the similarly-titled Christian book "Stunden der Andacht zur Beförderung wahren Christent…hums und häuslicher Gottesverehrung" by the German author Heinrich Zschokke. Like the original, this adaptation was written in order to propagate religious rationalism and reform religion in the spirit of the European enlightenment.
