Hard Back. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Reprint. 428 Pages Indexed. Beautiful As New book with no marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. This Edition first published by Prospero Books in 2000 from the 1915 Dodd, Mead & Co. edition. A Demco vinyl covering has protected the book and the dust jacket. The subject of songs, stories and plays, Sam Steele-The Lion of the North--- became a legend in his own time. His life is closely linked to the early history of the Dominion of Canada, not only as a witness, but also as a participant. A policeman since the age of 16, Steele became a member of the North-West Mounted Police at its inception. During his time with the force he played pivotal roles in many of the most important events in Canadian history: the March West, the Northwest Rebellion, the building of the CPR, and the Klondike Gold Rush. Steele was the man who arrested Louis Riel, encouraged Sitting Bull to return to the United States, and thwarted American plans to annex the Klondike. He was at Craigellachie for the driving of the Last Spike. In his later years, Steele led Canadian troops in the Boer War and the First World War. Even in death, Steele continued to have an effect on Canadian history -- his funeral, the largest in western Canada; caused a break in the violence and turmoil of the Winnipeg General Strike. Forty Years in Canada, written near the end of his life, is Sam Steele's story told in his own words.
