[half-title], [frontis with tissue guard], [title|copyright], 1-276 pages plus ten b/w portrait plates on unpaged leaves all present as called for. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 13.75cm. No dust jacket, i.e. lacking. Green cloth with toning to spine and board margins; usual Neale mottling to boards and spine; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright. Gilt top edge; text block's fore-edge and bottom edge have light toning/soiling as well as several stains with varying effects to some leaves' margins. Ink ownership inscription "This book belongs to | 1928 Ths B Franklin" orientated vertically along front pastedown's gutter margin; author's three-line pencil inscription "R.L. O'Neal, with compliments of. | The Author." upon front free endpaper but with three slender handwritten ink lines atop (but by no means obscuring) the author's inscription apparently done by Thomas Franklin to denote the passing of the book from O'Neal to himself; pencil inscriptions on rear free endpaper verso with pencil lines/cross-outs "R.L. O'Neal | Huntsville | Ala" and "Goodman[?] | of B'ham | Ala." Some soiling and toning to several initial and rear leaves; scattered creased corners and a few blemishes to interior leaves in addition to aforementioned margin stains; majority of interior leaves remain clean. B/w frontispiece shows the Third Texas Cavalry battle flag. Binding shows slight stress between half-title and frontis recto and towards rear between pages 268-269 but otherwise firm. With Introduction and nineteen chapters in which Samuel Barron reviews the unit's involvement in the Civil War in Missouri, Corinth, Iuka, Holly Springs, Thompson's Station, Vicksburg, Yazoo City, Union General Judson Kilpatrick's raid in the Jonesboro, Georgia area, and the close of the Atlanta campaign. A scarce Neale publication and a well-regarded Texas Confederate regimental cited as #25 in Robert Krick's NEALE BOOKS; AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY and summarized therein as "A lively chronicle of fighting, marching and waiting. The 3rd Texas Calvary was very active and distinguished in the fighting of the western campaigns. Barron's recollections of soldier life in camp and in the field are a valuable addition to the narrative of battles and skirmishes. The sum total is one of the better confederate memoirs treating of the western cavalry." Book was acquired from the multi-generational family mansion Franklin Square in Columbus, Mississippi of which past owner Thomas Blewett Franklin (1848-1931) was part of the ancestral line; Franklin was a Confederate veteran having served in Company H of the 4th Mississippi Cavalry although another source indicates service in Colonel Robert O. Perrin's 11th Mississippi Cavalry. The rfep Goodman connection in the book's ownership chain eluded cursory research but inscribee R.L. O'Neal of Huntsville, Alabama is quite likely Robert Leroy O'Neal (1855-1931), the editor of the city's Weekly Mercury newspaper who, although too young to be a Civil War veteran, virulently exuded old South sympathies which could have easily led to an acquaintance with attorney, politician, judge, and Third Texas Cavalry lieutenant Samuel B.
