Second Edition, the first issued in parts between 1784 and 1792. Samuel Middiman (1750-1831) was employed by the Boydells for several years and engraved several of the plates in the Shakespeare Gallery. As the DNB points out, his "chief excellence lay in the engraving of landscape, in which he pursued worthily the course marked out by [William] Woollett and others." In this, his best-known book, he based his plates on landscape drawings by such artists as Francis Wheatley and himself. This copy contains a second, variant Plate II, showing an entirely different view of Keswick-Lake than that depicted in the first, customary plate and described in the text. Engraving with etching, 260 x 405mm (plate size), 425 x 585mm (sheet size), some very light spotting to the margins, small fault (20 x 5mm) to edge of plate mark, not touching image, mounted. This engraving after a drawing by Webber comes from the official account of Cook's Third Voyage, published in 1784. The Resolution and the Discovery returned to Hawai'i on 17 January 1779. When the vessels arrived at Kealakekua Bay on the western shore of the island, Cook recorded in his journal that about 1000 canoes came out to meet the two ships. Cook was afforded god-like status and Kalani'opu'u (known to the Europeans as Terryaboo, King of Hawaii) took the cloak from his own shoulders and put it around Cook's. King also mentions that Kalani'opu'u 'put a feathered cap upon his head, & a very handsome fly flap in his hand: besides which he laid down at the Captain's feet 5 or 6 Cloaks more, all very beautiful, & to them of the greatest value'. The scene depicted here most likely took place on 19th January, 1779. Cook, with a cloak around his shoulders, sits with three of his officers in front of a sacred building with 17 Hawai'ian men in front of them, whilst another man kneels to the side of the main group one of the Hawai'ans offers up an animal to Cook. It is interesting to note that the print does not show the many carved idols and skulls impaled on poles recorded by members of the expedition who saw this place. Beddie, 1743 [60].

Later impression from the original engraved plate by Samuel Middiman. The Boydells' original plates were purchased and restored by Shearjashub Spooner (1809-1859) in 1852, after which he published a two-volume set entitled The American edition of Boydell's Illustrations of the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare, by the Most Eminent Artists of Great Britain. Spooner was a successful New York dentist who produced several other arts publishing projects. Spooner's Boydell Shakespeare edition has rich impressions, many details having been enlivened by the re-engraving of worn areas. Therefore, these are later states of the earlier prints, one indication of Spooner's printings is the plate number to the left of the title area, in this case "36". In 1786, the printseller John Boydell (1719-1804) 'embarked upon the most important enterprise of his life, viz. the publication, by subscription, of a series of prints illustrative of [the works of] Shakespeare, after pictures painted expressly for the work by English artists. For this purpose he gave commissions to all the most celebrated painters of this country for pictures, and built a gallery in Pall Mall for their exhibition. The execution of this project extended over several years. In 1789 the Shakespeare Gallery contained thirty-four pictures, in 1791 sixty-five, in 1802 one hundred and sixty-two, of which eighty-four were of large size. The total number of works executed was 170, three of which were pieces of sculpture, and the artists employed were thirty-three painters and two sculptors, Thomas Banks and the Hon. Mrs. Damer. It appears from the preface to the catalogue of 1789, and from other recorded statements of Boydell, that he wished to do for English painting what he had done for English engraving, to make it respected by foreigners.' (DNB). Joseph Wright of Derby was fascinated with the effects of light, and made a name for himself by producing what came to be known as candlelight pictures. This innovative genre was typified by its intimate figure groups illuminated by candles or lamps. An attorney's son, he trained to be a portrait painter in London before returning to Derby. He was one of the first important English artists to achieve his reputation in the provinces, and his dramatic paintings are some of England's most treasured works. His paintings echo sentiments of the Enlightenment in depicting scenes of scientific experiment, new machinery, or artistic study. Boydell commissioned this dramatic image from Wright for his Shakespeare Gallery and the painting was lovingly engraved by Samuel Middiman. It depicts Antigonus pursued by a bear along the cliffs of a rocky coastline, illustrating the famously brief, "Exit Antigonus, pursued by a Bear". Some foxing to plates but mainly to margins. A little bumped and rubbed but a very good copy. A collection of views of Great Britain including what is probably the earliest engraved view of Folkestone, dated 1787, and two further Kent views. Full contemporary calf, with spine expertly rebacked. Some minor shelfwear/leather loss evident in lower corner and small stretch of lower edge. Evidence of light dampstain on front board on narrow band near spine. Still, contemporary calf very healthy and attractive. Some foxing or soilage in plate margins, not affecting pictorial parts. Text pages tend to be very clean. Overall a very good copy of a rare and desirable landscape plate book. Two plates, 47 and 48, misnumbered.
