Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. The history of the Church of St Mary the Great at Cambridge, from its humble beginnings to its status as one of the most splendid collegiate churches in England, is intertwined with the university itself. This book provides insightful historical notes, architectural descriptions, and a valuable appendix of inventories. This book traces the church's architectural journey, from its early Decorated style to its Perpendicular rebuilding. The result is a structure that reveals the changing tastes and architectural advancements almost century by century. The authors' attention to detail provides a captivating insight into the evolution of English Gothic architecture. The work of Samuel Sandars in exploring the church's historical significance is equally illuminating. Sandars unearths curious details of life and worship within the church walls, from the early guilds and fraternities to the sermons of radical reformers like Hugh Latimer. These details richly capture the narrative of Cambridge's religious and academic life. With meticulous archival research and informed observations, the authors offer not just a record of the church's past but an exploration of its role in shaping the intellectual and spiritual landscape of Cambridge. Through these pages, readers will discover the significance of St Mary the Great, not only as a magnificent architectural treasure but as a living testament to the intertwined histories of religion, learning, and society.
