Four folio sheets, each folded to make four pages, one mimeographed handbill, and one three-page mimeographed press release on two legal sheets (8½" x 14"). Handbill with toning and a couple of tiny chips at the very topedge, press release with an old horizontal fold and a bit of st…aining in the margin, else just about fine. Six pieces related to the Welfare Rights Movement of the late 1960s, three centering around the "take-no-prisoners New York City welfare rights organizer" Beulah Sanders. Included are three issues of NOW!, the organ of the Washington, D. C.-based National Welfare Rights Organization, founded by noted African-American chemist George Wiley. (One issue features a "mug shot" of the group's Public Enemy Number 1: Arkansas Congressman Wilbur D. Mills). Also included is a large promotional piece for the Citywide Coordinating Committee of Welfare Groups (Beulah Sanders, Chaiman), and two pieces related to Sanders' run for State Senate as the Freedom and Peace candidate for the 25th State Senatorial District. These are a mimeographed fundraising handbill, and a three-page mimeographed press release of her speech announcing and outlining her reasons for running: "Harsh experience has taught me that the only way for a poor person in this country to attain the 'life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness' which so many people take for granted is by fighting for it." She also talks about a recent trip to Paris (with other "concerned citizens," including playwright Arthur Miller) to discuss negotiations and options for peace; she returned disheartened. A collection of uncommon material related to the Welfare Rights Movement of the later 1960's.
