A very well-loved copy of this scarce edition of the author's 19th-century historical romance, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest stories ever written about old California. This edition contains both Volumes I & II in this single volume. The Native-American love story was…made into a stage play & motion picture, continuing to enthrall subsequent generations, & the legend of Ramona lives on today in the San Diego County town that bears its name (note: a 18-year-old Raquel Welch played the leading role in the town's production of the Ramona Outdoor Play). Originally published in 1884) & by Little, Brown in 1900, this edition from that same publisher has an Introduction & original photographs by A. C. Vroman on both Frontispieces & 22 black-and-white plates, all with tissue overlays, There are also 26 decorative headings from drawings by famed Canadian illustrator Henry Sandham. Condition is only Fair: decorative tan cloth-covered boards show heavy rubbing to extremities, tearing at both ends of spine, & light soil. Hardcover has deep green cloth-covered boards blind-stamped with an elaborate, scrolling decoration & gilt lettering to front & spine (somewhat faded to the latter). Condition is VG: : very clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with moderate tanning, completely unmarked save for former student's name on old school award sticker dated 1903 to ffep. Tissue guard over frontispiece is intact, but torn at binding. Short unclosed tear to title page, page 123-124 is completely detached, but intact. Mild rubbing to extremities, heavier at all corners & both ends of spine, with slight fraying here. No DJ, as issued.
