The title of the exhibition, Combi-Nation, is a play on words and refers to the fact that the artists work with ôimpure strategiesö, (combining diverse elements in the same work); furthermore, in Spanish the word has the connotation of the ôunification of nationsö. The subtitle, imagen sueca, strives to indicate that the artists represented here are all dealing with a common theme: ôThe Image of Swedenö and that image is presented in many different ways., English, Year1993, Illust.

Why do we consider a dirty, broken coffee cup ugly when compared with a whole, round cup? How do we actually define what is ugly? Beautiful things have always been the objects for an aesthetic discussion in past decades, but the ugly has always been relegated to the background, existing simply as a negation of beauty, or its complete opposite. Sandqvist initiates a discussion concerning the concept of ugly as he sees the once definitive borders between ugly and beautiful become blurred in contemporary art and society. Beginning with StockholmÆs Modern Museum, he describes the evolution of the idea of beauty. In the end, Sandqvist wonders if ugliness will find its own unique place in our aesthetic, without any reference to concepts of beauty., Swedish, Year1998, Illust. B/W, Illust.

Hardcover. Condizione: VG, Like New. Blue & white & illus. boards, 534 pp., 50 BW illus. "This book is about Modernism and Avant-Garde movements in Central and Eastern European art around the last turn of the century. It sketches a surrealistic, bewildering, irrational arena. At the same time, we are offered a differentiated view on the complex whole of the avantgarde scene in Eastern Europe. The author takes us to dark soirées, scandalous dada theatrical performances, drunken bouts with loudmouthed reformers. Subjectivity stands against rationality, ethnonationalism against internationalism. Yugoslavian zenitism, Czech poetism, Hungarian activism, and other less-known isms, are proposed in exstatic outbursts in shortlived magazines. The pace is hectic, the commitment enormous, and the sheer force of strongminded individuals overwhelming." (Jan von Bonsdorff, Uppsala University).
