Neatly inscribed by the author to Ingalill Pegelow, art historian specializing in medieval wall painting. Ann Arbor, [Mich.] / UMI Dissertation Services / Washington, University of Washington, Scandinavian language and literature, 1998. Diss. 8vo. 412 pp. Liten Karin / Little Karin is the main character in, and the title of, a well-known folk song that appears in, among other places, Sweden (SMB 42) and Denmark (DgF 101). The theme goes back to the legend of the saint Catherine of Alexandria. According to the folk tale, Little Karin serves at the king's farm, where the young king falls in love with her and in turn offers her a gray horse with a golden saddle, his reddest gold crown, and finally half the kingdom. Karin declines all suggestions and instead suggests that this be given to the young queen so that she herself can walk with honor. The king then puts her in the barrel of nails and lets his minions roll her around in it. Karin is then picked up by two angels and taken to heaven whereupon the king is picked up by two ravens who take him to hell.
