Trade Paperback with Dust Jack. Condizione: Like New. Murray Tinkelman (Illustrations); Susan Shankin (Design); Vaughn Andrews (Cover Design); Sandy Koufax (Front Cover Photo); Warren Spahn (Back Cover Photo) (illustratore). 1st Harvest Edition: 2001. 310 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy save very mild shelf wear, with clean text on crisp and bright pages. Synopsis: Beyond the techniques and training, baseball begins with one player facing another and the psychological battle that they wage-the head game. In his critically acclaimed and bestselling new book, Roger Kahn presents the story of this supreme war of wits and the people who changed the course of baseball by playing, what he calls, chess at 90 miles an hour. In The Head Game, Kahn investigates not only grips, tactics, and physics, but also the intelligence, maturity, and competitive fire that has inspired some of the greatest hurlers in history. By covering renowned pitchers and pitching minds-from Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson, and Bruce Sutter to today's reigning pitching coach, Leo Mazzone-Roger Kahn sheds new light on baseball's most pivotal contest. A delightful and edifying tour of America's favorite pastime seen through the pitcher's eyes, The Head Game is as lively and familiar and old-shoe as the game itself, even today (Los Angeles Times). Famed sportswriter and journalist Kahn unpacks a lifetime of knowledge about pitching and tells anecdotes about major players in the game, including Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, and others. Unquestionably valuable as a tour of some of baseball's greatest pitchers.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [6] 294, [18] pages. Frontis illustration. Statistics. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some corner bumping. Pencil notations inside front cover. Includes 17 pages of unique Koufax statistics provided by Allan Roth, former Dodger statistician, including a game-by-game breakdown of Koufax's entire pitching career through 1965. Sandy Koufax was a left-handed pitcher; he played his entire Major League career for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, from 1955-1966. the book is worth it for the detailed description of Game 1 of the 1963 World Series. At times, he goes batter-by-batter, pitch-by-pitch, telling you what's going through his mind and what he's trying to accomplish with each pitch to the likes of Mantle, Maris, and company. Sanford "Sandy" Koufax (born Sanford Braun; December 30, 1935) is a former American Major League Baseball (MLB) left-handed pitcher. He pitched 12 seasons for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, from 1955 to 1966. Koufax, at age 36 in 1972, became the youngest player ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Koufax's career peaked with a run of six outstanding years from 1961 to 1966, before arthritis in his left elbow ended his career prematurely at age 30. He was an All-Star for six seasons and was the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1963. He won three Cy Young Awards in 1963, 1965, and 1966, by unanimous votes, making him the first three-time Cy Young winner in baseball history and the only one to win three times when one overall award was given for all of major league baseball instead of one award for each league. Koufax also won the NL Triple Crown for pitchers those same three years by leading the NL in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average. Koufax was the first major league pitcher to pitch four no-hitters and the eighth pitcher to pitch a perfect game in baseball history. Despite his comparatively short career, Koufax's 2,396 career strikeouts ranked 7th in history as of his retirement, trailing only Warren Spahn (2,583) among left-handers. Koufax, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martínez, and Nolan Ryan are the only four pitchers elected to the Hall of Fame who had more strikeouts than innings pitched. Koufax is also remembered as one of the outstanding Jewish athletes in American sports. His decision not to pitch Game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur garnered national attention as an example of conflict between professional pressures and personal beliefs.

All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the spine/binding is exceedingly tight and square and which looks as though the volume has barely been read, if at all (see photographs). "To most observers Sandy Koufax is simply the best pitcher in baseball today, possibly the best in the history of the game. Few people realize that his rise to the top of his profession was far from easy. Sandy came to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955 without any minor-league experience. For the next six years he battled his own wildness and long periods of inactivity; he almost quit. He had his first big winning year in 1961, but it wasn't until 1963 that he became a twenty game winner. It was in the World Series of that year that he broke the all-time Series strikeout record in the opening game; at the same time he virtually broke the spirit of the pround Yankees. Sandy discusses in detail his carefully developed strategy in preparing to take on the Yanks. He also explains the much publicized - and much misinterpreted - shoulder and finger ailments which threatened to finish his brilliant career prematurely. The reader will follow Koufax through his Brooklyn boyhood, his passion for three-man basketball, his life at the University of Cincinnati. Here, too, Sandy reveals the series of freak incidents which made him a Dodger when he seemed destined to be a Pittsburgh Pirate. Finally, Koufax discloses for the first time the full story of his salary disputes with the Dodgers which received nationwide attention. There are more than a few home truths in what he has to say about the inequities of a ballplayer's negotiations for his contract. In this book the reader will have access to some unique and remarkable Koufax statistics, provided by Allan Roth, Former Dodger statistician. Included among them is a game-by-game breakdown of Sandy's entire pitching career through 1965. Here is the real Koufax, a man of pride and modesty, utterly devoted to the art and craft of pitching - a man who is also dedicated to fostering good sportsmanship in America." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
