It is, in effect, a celebration of his long service in the Ashmolean Museum as the Keeper of Western Art. Museum collections develop their great strengths in one of two ways: through gifts of private collections and through the knowledge and enthusiasm of curators. The Ashmolean's renowned and important collection of Italian Maiolica owes its foundation to the former and the bequest of C.D.E. Fortnum. But it has grown and developed in remarkable ways over the last three decades thanks to the energy and expertise of Professor Timothy Wilson. During his 27 years as Keeper of Western Art, Tim was responsible for a truly extraordinary range and number of important acquisitions across the fine and decorative arts. As one of the world's leading scholars of Italian Maiolica, it was only natural that he would continue to build on Fortnum's legacy.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Elisa P. Sani, V & A Publishing. The V&A has the greatest collection of maiolica in the world. This long awaited study explores the significance of these fascinating objects in the art and social history of the Italian Renaissance. This book traces the use of Maiolica objects in the Renaissance, from birth through courtship and marriage rituals to death, and gives an engaging insight into the life of noble families in this period. New photography shows the dazzling palette of colours which has not faded over time, that was used to decorate these objects, and emphasizes why these objects were prized in the Renaissance and remain so popular with today's collectors. Italian Renaissance Maiolica also includes illustrations from Piccolpasso's sixteenth-century manuscript Three books of the Potter's Art, an incomparable source on maiolica, to illustrate how these highly valued objects were made.Elisa P. Sani was formerly Assistant Curator in the Ceramics & Glass Department at the V&A. She is an internationally renowned Italian maiolica scholar and has catalogued ceramics for important public collections in Italy and England. Hardback.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Maiolica before the age of Raphael examines the origin of Italian maiolica and its evolution from c. 1350 up until 1500, a period which engendered some of the most rapid and exciting innovations in all ceramic art, before maiolica's better known heyday in the High Renaissance. High Renaissance maiolica, produced in Italy in the orbit of Raphael and other artists, is widely known and has been extensively studied. This istoriato, or narrative, maiolica graces the collections of many of the world's greatest museums. But not for almost 100 years has attention been focused on magnificent works that preceded it in the 14th and 15th centuries, which were at times prized by contemporary patrons more highly than precious metals. This new publication refocuses the spotlight of contemporary scholarship onto the birth of design in Italian maiolica, and its evolution from c. 1350 up until 1500. It was during this formative period that its characteristic tin-based glaze, with the pure and brilliant white surface it offered the late-medieval potter, engendered some of the most rapid and exciting innovations in all ceramic art. Potters began to decorate the surfaces of their earthenware vessels (of an increasingly varied spectrum of shapes and forms) with squirming, meticulous designs of unparalleled ingenuity and expression that incorporated multisensory influences from luxury contemporary textiles, metalwork, and exotic lustreware from Islamic Spain. Illustrating and describing in-depth over forty rare objects from the foremost centers of production that have survived in private hands, this catalogue discusses the spread and evolution of the medium, as well as the history of collecting and the changing taste for Italian pre-Renaissance pottery during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
