Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). The covers, in the main, are quite clean. The gilt lettering on the front is nicely bright. On the spine it is quite faded, though legible. At the top edge of the spine there is a sliver of loss and a couple of tiny tears. At the bottom edge of the spine there's a little bit of crinkling. The cover edges are in very good shape. The top corner of the front cover has a small spot of rub-through. The front bottom corner has an even smaller spot of rub-through. The top page is gilt. The page edges look clean. The inside covers and end papers are brown. The book is solidly bound. However there is a thin split of the paper at the juncture between the inside front cover and facing front end paper, as well as between the blank verso of the half-title page and blank verso of the frontispiece. The affected pages are tightly bound from top to bottom and the front cover is solidly bound as well. In the text I found one instance of a thin space at the juncture between two facing pages, both of these pages are nicely tightly bound. And finally, and the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper there is a similar thin split in the paper there with some webbing showing, but the rear cover is also nicely, tightly bound. The pages are in very nice condition. While they are uniformly toned, as would be expected, they are also quite clean. Scrolling through I saw a few consecutive pages with a speck-sized spot at their margin. Otherwise, over the entirety of the pages I found only a handful or so of small, inconspicuous spots. I found one tiny crease just below a top corner. I didn't see any other creasing. There are no markings in the book. There is a tiny label just off the top edge of the front inside cover. On it is printed 'Private Library of Daniel Ashworth'. There are no other attachments to be found anywhere in the book. Nor is there any writing of any kind. There are two illustrations identified and present. The frontispiece is 'Santley in Frau Diavolo'. The other 'Santley in Rigoletto.' Both illustrations are in excellent condition, very clean, no wear. 'Sir Charles Santley was an English opera and oratorio singer with a bravura technique who became the most eminent English baritone and male concert singer of the Victorian era. His has been called 'the longest, most distinguished and most versatile vocal career which history records.' Santley appeared in many major opera and oratorio productions in Great Britain and North America, giving numerous recitals as well. Having made his debut in Italy in 1857 after undertaking vocal studies in that country, he elected to base himself in England for the remainder of his life, apart from occasional trips overseas. One of the highlights of his stage career occurred in 1870 when he led the cast in the first Wagner opera to be performed in London, The Flying Dutchman, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.'.
