John Sappington (1776-1856) was a Missouri physician who used quininie extracted from the cinchona tree bark to treat a variety of fevers including malaria which was endemic to the Missouri Valley. He sold his "anti-fever pills" nationwide and made quite a fortune doing so. 216pp. Size: 6 3/4" x 4 1/2".

Note, Dr. John Sappington is related to the famous Sappington House in South west St. Louis, a notable historic sight and museum, an early settlement in Missouri. Located at Sappington Road and Reco Roads. American physician John Sappington (1776-1856) developed a quinine pill to treat malaria. The recommendations at the front of the book include many Missouri residents praising this "Anti-Fever Pill," which is discussed here. Includes "An alphabetical arrangement of the classes of medicines used in this work." This was the first medical book published in Missouri An early exponent of the value of quinine for the treatment of malaria, and finding the drug unavailable in the malaria-ridden western and southern states, Sappington began in 1832 the wholesale distribution of "Dr. John Sappington's Anti-Fever pills." Over 1,000,000 boxes of these were sold throughout the western and southern states. In the above work Sappington described his method of preparing his quinine-containing pills, and advocated quinine, properly used, as the only necessary treatment for malaria. "Although living in a frontier community far removed from the seats of medical learning, Sappington's views regarding the treatment of fevers were more in accord with modern medical practice than were those of his more favored contemporaries. Although the title page infers that this is a later edition, it is the only edition list…ed in any of the standard references, including the NUC. Sappington moved to Missouri in 1817 after studying medicine with his father, a physician in Tennessee, and attending medical lectures at the University of Pennsylvania." DAB notes: "Sappington's life may be said to have been devoted to the cause of quinine. In the early development of the Southern and Western states, malaria was so prevalent that it was one of the greatest obstacles with which the early settlers had to contend. Soon after quinine (isolated from the Peruvian Bark in 1820) became available in the United States, Sappington recognized its specific nature in the treatment of malaria, and strongly advocated its use.In [The Theory and Treatment of Fevers] he gave in detail his method of preparing his quinine-containing pills and advocated quinine, properly used, as the only thing necessary to cure malaria."
