We know that gigantic fauna, wiped out by some cataclysmic ice age, once existed. Their human counterparts have left traces in monumental stone structures, vast cave homes, and even a few titanic bones. But the richest source of information we have are myths and legends. No pantheon of gods in any land is without its giants. Folklore abounds in stories of enormous creatures, predatory or friendly, who ravaged or rescued according to their nature. Reports continue to appear from time to time of tracks of staggering size discovered in remote areas. But even though the strong possibility exists that marvelous monsters are still among us, no one has seriously examined either the kind of life that early giants might have lived, or how giants are managing in a world that has changed so drastically since their heyday. No one has considered what it feels like to be a giant~why, for instance, do so many have drooping ears? It now appears that this is an evolutionary adaptation to the problem of hearing those chittering little creatures at their feet. This and other fascinating giant lore, together with an exploration of the various types and forms of giant, their ethnic origins, habits, customs, and cultures, and human fiction on the subject~all magnificently illustrated in superb paintings conceived in the vivid imaginations of three artists and their director, David Larkin~make up the main body of this work. Additionally, a carefully researched explanatory text, which further elucidates the bizarre life style of a genus humankind has too long used merely as a device to frighten small children, accompanies the illustrations. There is much more to giants than we customarily acknowledge. This remarkable volume fills an enormous gap in human knowledge. It is hoped that homo sapiens will welcome this opportuniry to take giants into their hearts and homes.
