Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. The Story of the Peace Corps by George Sullivan is a concise and informative account of the establishment and early years of the U.S. Peace Corps. First published in 1964, the book traces the origins of the organization from President John F. Kennedy's initial proposal in 1960 to its official creation in 1961. Sullivan details the selection and training processes for volunteers, who, by that time, numbered nearly 10,000 and were serving in 47 countries. The narrative highlights the Corps' diverse programs in agriculture, education, engineering, and community development. An appendix provides organizational details and lists of volunteers by region. While brief, the book offers a valuable introduction to the Peace Corps' mission and impact during its formative years. George Sullivan is a prolific American author renowned for his extensive contributions to nonfiction literature, particularly for children and young adults. Born on August 11, 1927, in Lowell, Massachusetts, he served as a journalist in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948 . Over his career, Sullivan has authored more than 200 books covering a diverse array of topics, including history, science, sports, and biographies . His works are noted for their clarity and accessibility, making complex subjects understandable and engaging for young readers. Sullivan's book Built to Last was honored with the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children in 2005 .

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are clean. There is color fading off the top edges of the blue part of the covers. The silver lettering on the spine is quite bright. There's just a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The book is square and solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through them a number of times without finding any instances of soiling. One top corner of a page was turned down and has a fairly sharp crease (away from the print). That has left a very light impression of itself on two pages before and after the creased page. I didn't see any other creasing anywhere in the book. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. You may be able to make out a vertical shaded line on both the front and rear cover. That's caused by the change on the covers of the book from the black to the blue, with each having a different texture (see fourth photo). Hence, this will be the case on all the jackets of this book. The jacket is in decent shape. There's a tear off the top edge just adjacent to the spine, another one on the spine, and there is a tiny loss at the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in very good condition with just a little indent at the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. As mentioned, it is already protected by a fitted cover. The book begins with statements by John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. They are followed by a Foreword by Sargent Shriver. There are chapters written by Walter Heller, David A. Morse, Emmanuel Pelaez, W. Willard Wirtz, and Sargent Shriver. From the front cover: 'Money alone will not build a viable world. There must be indigenous trained manpower to perform the "middle level" tasks. Here a distinguished group of world leaders tells of constructive ways to give new countries a chance to live and develop.'.
