Es folgen die Jahre der Weimarer Republik, in denen die vom Staat in ihre eigene Freiheit entlassene Landeskirche sich zurechtfinden mußte. Die Zeit des Dritten Reiches mit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, das Werben des Nationalsozialismus um die Kirche, die Neigung kirchlicher Kreise, darauf einzugehen, die beginnende Abgrenzung der Kirche und schließlich ihre Unterdrückung auf der einen sowie ihre Abwehrversuche und Proteste auf der anderen Seite werden an Beispielen aufgezeigt. Im letzten Abschnitt werden die nach dem Zusammenbruch im Jahre 1945 einsetzenden mühsamen und zunächst tastenden Versuche eines Neuanfangs dargestellt.
