Winckelmanns Satz spielt auf den im 18. Jahrhundert in Literatur und Kunst viel zitierten Mythos von der Entstehung der Zeichnung und Malerei an. Die grie-chische Töpfertochter Corinthia hält zur Erinnerung an ihren scheidenden Geliebten dessen Kopf mit der Konturierung des Schattenrisses fest, den eine vor dem jungen Mann stehende Kerze auf die hinter ihm liegende Wand geworfen hat. Die Betrachtung der Silhouette des von ihr Gegangenen erweckt in ihr jene Sehnsucht nach dem Verlorenen, von der der Klassizist Winckelmann spricht. Gerade durch die Reduktion auf den Umriss erregt der Schattenriss die Einbildungskraft und setzt jenen Mechanismus der Projektion frei, den die Abstraktion in der Kunst von damals bis heute hervorruft. Dieses Vermögen der Abstraktion des Schattenrisses und Scherenschnitts, die Phantasie zu wecken, hat zu ihrer besonderen Wertschätzung bei den Künstlern und Dichtern der Romantik geführt. So schreibt August Wilhelm Schlegel, mit dem Runge zeitweilig im Gedan-kenaustausch stand: Beim Scherenschnitt werde die Phantasie aufgefordert, zu ergänzen, und nach der empfangenen Anregung selbstständig fortzubilden, statt dass das ausgeführte Gemälde sie durch entgegenkommende Befriedigung gefangen nimmt." Weniger ist hier mehr. Bis heute hat der Scherenschnitt seine die Vorstellungskraft anregende Wirkung nicht verloren. Vielleicht haben gerade deshalb junge Künstler in den letzten Jahren das Medium für sich neu entdeckt. Sie experimentieren mit ungewohnten Techniken und Materialien, sie erobern selbst den dreidimensionalen Raum. Von der rein flächigen Zweidimensionalität emanzipiert sich der Scherenschnitt zum skulpturalen Objekt. Die Ausstellung Cut. Scherenschnitte 1970-2010 findet parallel zur großen Retrospekti-ve Philipp Otto Runges statt, dessen Scherenschnitte vielen Künstlern als Anregung dienten. Ich danke Petra Roettig und Henrike Mund, die die Ausstellung zusammen konzipiert und realisiert haben. Vor allem gilt unser Dank den Künstlern, die in dieser Ausstellung mitge-wirkt und sie mit ihrem großen Engagement ermöglicht haben. Viele von ihnen haben eigens für die Präsentation in der Hamburger Kunsthalle neue Werke oder Installationen vor Ort geschaffen.
