"Doctor Syntax, one of the most popular characters in nineteenth-century English fiction made his public debut in May 1809 in the first issue of Poetical Mag…azine under the editorial supervision of publisher and art dealer Rudolph Ackermann. Under the title 'The Schoolmaster's Tour', the magazine featured its first installment of the adventures and misadventures of this eccentric traveller and pedantic cleric, illustrated with aquatint drawings by the prolific caricaturist and comic artist, Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), with narrative commentary by William Combe. Although Doctor Syntax became something of a folk hero, stimulating many copies in the nineteenth-century, the last reprint of Rowlandson's own work was in 1868. Since then, the series has never been reproduced in its entirety. Jerold Savory's Thomas Rowlandson's Doctor Syntax Drawings is the first book to include all the illustrations to the three Tours of Doctor Syntax. With over eighty reproductions, each accompanied by a commentary by the author and selections from the original verse, and many illustrations from sequels and other 'Syntaxiana', this book will become the definitive study of Rowlandson's Doctor Syntax illustrations and of the phenomenon that the character became." -Front Flap. Quarter-cloth in grey green, rubbed and lightly frayed to edges of cloth, with marbled paper boards. Faint foxing to top and bottom edges of front boards, and heavily foxed to rear board,… with small (1in) red scratch at fore-edge of rear board, extended into inside front cover. Cloth title window at front board, connected to board only at one corner. Lightly foxed along edges of inside covers. Extensive lightly penciled notes from previous bookseller at inside front cover; one of these notes claims this copy was 'Part of Tate (James) collection.' Cloth limitation plate at inside back cover, with written: #23 of 30 sets of ten broadsides, each SIGNED by the poets. Please note that broadsheet seven went unsigned, as Merton passed away in 1968. Additionally, this copy of the Unicorn Broadsheets Series One is missing the fourth broadsheet, Kenneth Rexroth's 'All Year Long.' Individual broadsheets with condition notes as follows: 1) 'A Curse on the Men in Washington, Pentagon' by Gary Snyder, copyright 1968. Watermark of vertical lines, with four stylized initials near bottom of sheet. Untrimmed edges. Fine. 2) 'In a Boat on Big Stone Lake' by Robert Bly, silk screen by Vanden Berg, copyright 1968. Watermark of vertical lines. Faint creasing wear along left edge, else fine. 3) 'The Torches' by James Tate, print by Vanden Berg, copyright 1968. Watermark of vertical lines, with 'Tuscany' at bottom right. Untrimmed edges. Fine. Additional unsigned copy also included, very good if gently age-soiled/smudged. 4) 'All Year Long' by Kenneth Rexroth is NOT present. 5) 'For Raymond Chandler' by David Meltzer, copyright 1970. Signed and numbered '23/30' by Meltzer. Fine. 6) 'Song of Expectancy' by George Hitchcock, copyright MCMLXX (1970). Watermark of horizontal lines. Untrimmed edges.
