The treatment of several collections of freshwater snails from Israel has resulted in the discovery of a new hydrobiid prosobranch snail in the springs of the former Lake Hula and catchment area of the River Jordan. For anatomical reasons a new genus (Miensiella) is created, so far comprising two species, of which one new (M. mienisi). The opportunity is used for a revision of the species of the genus Semisalsa in Israel and neighbouring areas. Some details are given about the living hydrobiids in Israel. [The taxa discussed include: M. gaillardoti, S. galileae, S. contempta, Pseudamnicola solitaria and Orientalina gaillardoti]. The occurrence of new Pseudamnicola species and other freshwater hydrobiid gastropoda from East Anatolia, Turkey, is discussed. The geological history of the area, starting from the Miocene Tethys Sea and its shores, is summarized. In this context the endemic character of the molluscan fauna of the Golbasi lake area near Adiyaman is mentioned, and a new Gyraulus subspecies is described from the region.
