Mais la littérature fantastique dont il s'agit dans ce travail est différente.Celle-ci est née au XIXe siècle, à l'époque de Mérimée, de Cazotte, de Maupassant et bien d'autres écrivains bien connus. C'est sur le dernier de ces auteurs que se concentrera ce travail, afin de faire ressortir les traits caractéristiques de la littérature fantastique, ses motifs principaux et les techniques d'écriture qui y sont appliquées. Tout d'abord nous verrons une définition du positivisme, philosophie qui dominait le XIXe siècle et qui a stimulé la naissance d'une littérature fantastique. Car, le fantastique s'oppose bien au positivisme, ce dernier fut très influencé par le Siècle des Lumières, marqué par l'essor des sciences naturelles et un abandon d'une vision du monde qui mystifient tout ce que l'on n'arrive pas à comprendre.L'importance de la littérature fantastique à notre époque devient claire lorsqu'on se rend compte que nous, hommes du XXIe siècle, sommes profondément influencés par les idées des positivistes. Nous nous fions exclusivement aux sciences naturelles, à des faits bien établis, en suivant les règles bien définis de la logique. La littérature fantastique a donné naissance à des genres littéraires populaires que nous sont très familiers de nous jours. Sans les auteurs fantastiques du XIXe siècle, il n'y aurait pas de littérature fantastique moderne dont la naissance a été stimulée par son pendant du XIXe siècle.
