In ihr spricht nicht der Geheimrat, nicht der akademische Lehrer und Forscher, hier erzahlt ein Mann, der viel gesehen, viel geschaffen und viel erlitten hat, Kindern, Enkeln und Freunden seinen Lebensgang. Bonhoeffer hatte nicht an eine Ver offentlichung gedacht. Jedoch die Lebensgeschichte eines Professors, der im Alter von 36 Jahren Kraepelin-Nachfolger in Heidelberg wurde, der bald danach Wernickes Lehr stuhl in Breslau ubernahm und zwei Jahre vor dem Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges zum Ordinarius in Berlin ernannt wurde, eine solche Chronik, schien uns, diirfte der Offentlichkeit doch nicht vorenthalten werden. Der stillen Gelassenheit, in der Bon hoeffer wahrend des Kaiserreiches, wahrend der Weimarer Republik und in der Hitler Zeit der Wahrheit der Forschung lebte und diese verteidigte, entspricht auch der gleich maBig erzahlende Ton in der Selbstdarstellung. Von dem Verfasser selbst ist unmittel bar wenig die Rede.
