This approach provides a vivid and readable portrait of how AJC, established in an act of conscience to rescue Jews from czarist oppression, became a global presence that made a difference on many of the key issues of the twentieth century. Although parts of the story have been told before for scholars or AJC members, this makes the record accessible to a much wider audience, including the general public. Based on an exhibit developed for AJC's Centennial Annual Meeting in 2006, the book organizes the agency's history into three sections: Engaging the World, Engaging America, and Engaging the Jewish World. Engaging the World ~ Starting with the AJC's successful 1913 campaign to abrogate a commercial treaty with Russia to protest discrimination against Jews, and through AJC's intervention as anti~Semitism resurges in Europe at the dawn of the twenty~first century, Engaging the World reveals the agency's ability to redress injustice using diplomacy and public opinion. Engaging America~This section emphasizes how from its early campaign against literacy tests for new immigrants, to its innovative use of media to battle Nazi propaganda and promote a more tolerant America, and through the fight for civil rights, AJC has always advanced both the particular interests of Jews and the universal imperatives of a more just and inclusive society. Engaging the Jewish World ~Engaging the Jewish World reveals AJC's role in the creation of the American Joint Distribution Committee, its support for the emergent State of Israel, and its ongoing efforts on Israel's behalf. ~ The section also highlights AJC's prescience in facing the modern challenges of Jewish identity, and its sustained commitment to Russian jews. These sections together with an opener called In The Beginning, dramatically depict the first hundred years of an agency deeply and effectively engaged in multiple and intersecting areas of critical concern to Jews and to humanity.
