Noch stark einer vorindustriellen Denkweise verpflichtet und nicht unbeeinflusst von seinem Mentor Carl von Haller, stellte sich S. als Redaktor und führender Kopf der Solothurner Ultramontanen dem repräsentativ-demokrat. Staatssystem der Liberalen mit direkt-demokrat. Forderungen entgegen. Dank seinem ausgesprochenen Sinn für koordinierte Pressearbeit und polit. Organisationsformen erlangte er gesamtschweiz. Anerkennung. U.a. baute er ein in seiner Art einmaliges polit. Korrespondenzbureau mit Verbindungen zu bedeutenden konservativen, kath. und prot. Kräften im In- und Ausland auf. Die bedrängte liberale Solothurner Regierung veranlasste anlässlich der Verfassungskämpfe von 1841 die gewaltsame Schliessung von Bureau und Zeitung und liess S. gerichtlich verfolgen. Nach Verbüssung einer wohl politisch motivierten Haftstrafe 1843 mit dem Ritterkreuz des päpstl. Ordens Gregors d. Gr. ausgezeichnet und 1844 zum Dr. beider Rechte der Univ. Würzburg ernannt, trat S. als Kabinettssekretär in den Dienst Konstantin Siegwart-Müllers, des Haupts der Luzerner Ultramontanen. 1854 war S. Gemeinderat der Bürgergemeinde und ab 1858 deren Verwaltungsrat und Finanzkommissär. 1855-80 Redaktor der "Schweiz. Kirchenzeitung" und 1852 von Papst Pius IX. in den Grafenstand erhoben, verschrieb er sich ganz dem Dienst am Schweizer Katholizismus. Er war 1857 Mitgründer des Piusvereins der Schweiz, dessen unermüdl. Präsident er bis zu seinem Tod blieb, sowie 1863 der Inländ. Mission und 1874 des Kath. Kultusvereins.» (HLS). 600 gr.
