Not in Bevis; not in Smith, American Travellers Abroad; Flake 7871: Smith (1817-1875) was a president of the Church and author of several publications. Eliza Roxey Snow (1804-1887) was Mormon poet and leader, who had received what was the best available education for a woman of her day. In 1842 she was secretly married to Joseph Smith under the "new dispensation" of plural marriage, and in 1849 married his successor Brigham Young. She "served the very important function of putting Mormon history into verse. thus helping to build the folk beliefs so important in fostering group solidarity." (DAB) Her younger brother, Lorenzo Snow (1814-1901) was an active convert and ardent missionary, and became one of the dominant leaders of the Church. While this trip took them through Europe, the most interesting aspects are the letters written describing the Holy Land, the inhabitants, holy places, customs,ceremonies, etc., as well as their impressions of Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and other places of interest in this part of the world.
