Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 4to. 33 cm. 65p. plus colophon. Illustrated with 12 original lithographs, each one signed in pencil by Adolf Schinnerer. Black cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Gold ribbon marker. Some wear to extremities with a couple of corners just barely rubbe…d through, top of spine just barely beginning to fray, cloth clean, gilt bright (!), rear hinge cracked but textblock still firmly attached, ribbon marker intact, all illustrations present and in fine condition, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. This copy, purchased from the estate of Elsa Winners Sherwin, is one of 85 copies printed on handmade and handcut laid paper with deckle edges. Where the number of this copy would appear in the colophon, there is now what appears to be a large check mark in black with a short perpendicular line in black near the end of the upstroke of the check mark (see accompanying photo of the colophon, ). This would seem to indicate that this is a special copy, perhaps belonging to the author, the illustrator or the printer, but I do not know this for certain (could it be a 4?). Johan August Strindberg 1849-1912) was a Swedish playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, and painter. He wrote more than 60 plays and more than 30 other literary works. He was an experimenter and iconoclast throughout his life, who explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and historical plays to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques. The drama offered here revolves around the conflict between the Captain, a father, husband, and scientist, and his wife, Laura, over the education of their only child. Through unscrupulous means, Laura gets the Captain to doubt his fatherhood until he suffers a mental and physical collapse. While writing The Father, Strindberg himself was experiencing marital problems and doubted the paternity of his children. With respect to his legacy, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Maxim Gorky, John Osborne, and Ingmar Bergman are among the many artists who have cited Strindberg as an influence. Eugene O'Neill, upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, dedicated much of his acceptance speech to describing Strindberg's influence on his work, and referred to him as "that greatest genius of all modern dramatists. The Father is one of his most famous and produced plays. He is viewed by many as as Sweden's greatest author, and is taught in schools as a key figure of Swedish culture. The most important contemporary literary award in Sweden, Augustpriset, is named for Strindberg. Adolf Ferdinand Schinnerer (1876 - 1949) was a German artist, active in painting, drawing and graphic design. He was also an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. A famous play by a famous Swedish author illustrated with unusual lithographs in a fine limited edition. Adolf Schinnerer [Adolf Ferdinand, 1876-1949] (illustratore).
