Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores how trace elements and organic carbons have accumulated in the sediments of southern Lake Michigan. The author analyzed 21 grab samples and sections of 21 cores from the lake, determining the concentrations of 13 trace elements, organic carbon, and less than 2-micro…n clay. The results show that bromine, chromium, copper, lead, and zinc are accumulating in the uppermost, recently deposited sediments in the deeper regions of southern Lake Michigan. Notably, areas of high concentration occur off Grand Haven and Benton Harbor in Michigan, off Waukegan in Illinois, and in the lake center near the Illinois-Wisconsin border. The author discovered that the concentrations of these five trace elements generally increase as the amount of organic carbon increases. The study concludes that the accumulation of these elements in the lake sediments is likely due to both natural processes and human activities, with soluble or colloidal organometallic complexes playing a significant role in their transport and sedimentation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
