The authors argue that a coherent blueprint never existed and that the apartheid system was the result of a pragmatic and tortuous process aimed at consolidating the leadership of a nationalist movement. In Part Two the authors examine the emerging trends in the South African political arena and economy, and review the various strategies to end apartheid. Unlike many others who have written on the subject, the authors take an unusually pragmatic approach. Drawing on studies of other divided societies, they then propose a framework within which a negotiated settlement may be possible, which would end apartheid and bring peace to a troubled region.".
