Incomplete pagination - approximately 100 pages present offering a scattered sampling of the book's full text and plates. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 18cm. Full title - SCHLEY AND SANTIAGO; AN HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE BLOCKADE AND FINAL DESTRUCTION OF THE SPANISH FLEET UNDER COMMAND OF ADMIRAL PASQUALE CERVERA, JULY 3, 1898. BY GEORGE EDWARD GRAHAM, TOGETHER WITH A PERSONAL NARRATIVE OF THE FIGHT, BY REAR-ADMIRAL WINFIELD SCOTT SCHLEY, U.S.N. ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY THE AUTHOR DURING THE CRUISE, AND DURING THE BATTLE. Dark navy blue cloth; mottling/staining along spine and joints as well as at lower boards; front board's pictorial oval centerpiece b/w portrait paste-on only adhered to board at bottom third; some flaking to boards' gilt stamping but still all easily legible; front board decoration presumably emulates the standard binding option available to the book's prospective customers; rear board's vertical band of gilt stamping represents how the full-size cloth binding's spine would appear. Gilt stamped dark leather strip is affixed to rear pastedown as salesman's example of the publisher's deluxe morocco binding option; leather strip causes strong band of toning on opposing rear free endpaper verso. Toning and foxing spots to text block edges; some staining and foxing to interior pages. Section of eight lined pages at book's rear for listing salesman's orders the first page of which has eight orders in pencil. Binding slightly shaken between front flyleaf verso and opposing leadoff b/w portrait plate of W.S. Schley; binding otherwise firm. Such heavily abridged copies were issued to stores and door-to-door salesmen as visual enticements so that customer could see a physical representation and the quality of the complete book which they would usually receive by mail.
