Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. William Hogarth (illustratore). 1st Edition. Here is " 'Among the Whores and Thieves', William Hogarth and 'The Beggar's Opera' ", Published in 1997 by the Yale Center for British Art. David Bindman and Scott Wilcox were the editors, and the text consists of seven Monographs by various authors. The book, a stiff paperback Exhibition Catalogue, was published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Yale Center for British art held from February 1 through April 6, 1997. This is the First Edition, now Out of Print - OP. The Yale Center for British Art keeps a copy in their Reference Library. "John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera' was the theatrical sensation of 1728. Its underworld of prostitutes and thieves burlesqued the heroic visions of history and mythology offered by the reigning form of the Italian opera, as its simple songs offered a popular alternative to the Italian opera's florid arias and recitatives. Between 1728 and 1731, William Hogarth painted at least five versions of the scene from 'The Beggar's Opera' in which the imprisoned highwayman, Macheath, stands between his two wives while they appeal to their fathers to save him from execution." [This was excerpted from the Yale Center for British Art's web page on the Exhibition, for which thank you!] CONTENTS : * Hogarth's Paintings of "The Beggar's Opera" --- by Christopher Swan * Inscrutible Space: Hogarth on Stage --- by Jennifer L. Prima edizione
First edition. Octavo. xii, 288pp. Index. Dark green over light blue boards, spine lettered in white. A fine, as new copy. This new research investigates socio-political and ethnic-cultural conflicts over wage gaps in Israel during the 1950s. The Academic Middle-Class Rebellion exposes the struggle of the Ashkenazi (European) professional elite to capitalize on its advantages during the first decade of Israeli statehood, by attempting to maximize wage gaps between themselves and the new Oriental Jewish proletariat. This struggle was met with great resistance from the government under the ruling party, Mapai, and its leader David Ben-Gurion. The clash between the two sides revealed diverse, contradictory visions of the optimal socio-economic foundation for establishing collective identity in the new nation-state. The study by Avi Bareli and Uri Cohen uncovers patterns that merged nationalism and socialism in 1950s Israel confronting a liberal and meritocratic vision. Contents: 1. Distributive justice and the white-collar workforce: the outbreak of conflict -- 2. The 'engine-coach car' dilemma: MAPAI's discourse on class, ethnicity, and modernization -- 3. "In torn soles on a marble floor": the Guri Committee and Sharett government debates on white-collar workers' wages, 1954-1955 -- 4. "On your mark!" public discourse after the 1955 elections -- 5. "If they strike-so be it!" the socialist pact to thwart the Guri Committee recommendations -- 6. A class-inclusive strike. Volume 30 of the Brill series, "Jewish Identities in a Changing World.".
