By utilizing a communicativeconceptualization of identity and interculturaltheorizing, light is shed on the complex negotiationprocess that tourists and hosts employ when makingsense of their experiences, themselves and othersthrough talk. The author demonstrates that the roleof communication and the level of adaptation arecentral to satisfactory outcomes for these(intercultural) tourist-host encounters. She alsoillustrates the disparate ways tourists and hostsconstruct identity and negotiate the presence oftourists on the community. By incorporating criticalnotions of history and power, our understanding isenhanced of problematic tourist communication styles;hosts preference for tourists adaptation; andcommunicative strategies tourists utilized toreconcile differences in privilege. Finally,practical advice based on these findings is provided.
