Schoeni, published by Aviation Quarterly Publishers in Plano, TX, is in very good condition. The dust jacket is protected by a clear mylar cover and remains in very good shape. The cover and exterior show no bumping, damage, or foxing, and the binding is tight and intact. The interior is clean and free of markings or highlighting, except for the signature of a previous owner dated 1978. Crisp, clear photos complement this detailed history of Voughts aviation legacy, making it an excellent addition for collectors or aviation enthusiasts seeking a well-preserved copy. (BR) Shelf 350.

Illustrations (some in color). History of Chance Vought Aircraft. Chauncey (Chance) Milton Vought was born in New York City in 1890. He became an engineer and designer in 1909, learned to fly in 1910 from pioneer aviator Max T. Lillie, and in 1916 became the chief designer of the Wright Company, where he designed the Wright-Martin V. On June 18, 1917, he and Birdseye Lewis established Lewis & Vought Corporation to profit from the opportunities presented by World War I. Vought died prematurely in 1930 from blood poisoning at the age of 42. Vought is the name of several related aerospace firms. These have included, in the past, Lewis and Vought Corporation, Chance Vought, Vought-Sikorsky, LTV Aerospace (part of Ling-Temco-Vought), Vought Aircraft Companies, and the current Vought Aircraft Industries. The first incarnation of Vought was established by Chance M. Vought and Birdseye Lewis in 1917. In 1928, it was acquired by United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, which a few years later became United Aircraft Corporation; this was the first of many reorganizations and buyouts. During the 1920s and 1930s, Vought Aircraft and Chance Vought specialized in carrier-based aircraft for the United States Navy, by far its biggest customer. Chance Vought produced thousands of planes during World War II, including the F4U Corsair. Vought became independent again in 1954, and was purchased by Ling-Temco-Vought in 1961. The company designed and produced a variety of planes and missiles throughout the Cold War.
