Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 192 pages. Published in 1988. Book-length Monograph on subject. One of the most beautiful books on the art and achievement of Hiroshige ever published in the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only in conjunction with the Rhode Island School of Design. The production values are outstanding in every respect: Oversize-volume format. Orange cloth boards with white titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Art by Hiroshige. Text by various scholar-contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents "Hiroshige: Birds And Flowers". Hiroshige created 5000 bird and flower studies in all, which are "endlessly experimenting with design, composition, and color. Hiroshige captured in these paintings, as nowhere else in his work, his poetic and idyllic sense of Nature" (Publisher's blurb). The prints in this magnificent volume were in the Abby Rockefeller Collection, now housed at the Rhode Island School of Design. Hiroshige is now regarded as one of the two greatest wood-block printmakers (the other being Hokusai, his predecessor). Ukiyo-e, which literally means "pictures of the floating world", was the art of the common people. It was not folk or primitive art nor was it royal court art, either. Like the photograph today, it could be infinitely reproduced as public demand dictated, and typically presented Japanese life and rituals, scenery and the four seasons, iconic portraits and landscapes, and in this instance, birds and flowers. Perhaps the best term for it is "artisanal", as it depended on the mastery of one's craft (rather than "concept" or "vision"). Very little is known about ukiyo-e precisely because it was not considered serious art, and was therefore not recorded, documented, collected, preserved, or archived. That it flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries is pretty much what we know. Westerners were awed, moved, and for once, humbled by what they saw: Great art of the most exquisite and delicate kind, dazzling virtuosity melded to a master craftsman's innate apprehension of The Beautiful. No words will do justice to the sublime beauty between the covers of this book. An absolute "must-have" title for Hiroshige and Japanese art book collectors. This title is a great art book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 92 color plates. One of the greatest artists of all time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HIROSHIGE TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0807611999. no.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 96 pages. Published in 1982. Exhibition Monograph. Pioneering account on subject. One of the most valuable books on the art and achievement of Ban Chiang, the pre-historic site of the ancient peoples of the present Thai Kingdom. The First Hardcover Edition. Published in a one-time-only print run as a hardcover original only. The Exhibition Monograph is now scarce. It is elegantly produced, in an oversize-volume format. With "earth color" orange cloth boards. Gilt pictorial design and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Dr. Joyce C. White and other scholars. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The production values are exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark travelling exhibition of the same name which commenced at the University of Pennsylvania's Cultural Museum and travelled on to several major venues in the United States, notably the Smithsonian Institute in 1982. Presents "Ban Chiang: Discovery of A Lost Bronze Age". A marvelous archaeological find, a labor of love of reconstruction. "As a result of the recent archaeological discoveries in the Thai village of Ban Chiang, scholars are re-evaluating the role of Southeast Asia in Pre-History. The pottery and bronze objects unearthed are of surprising antiquity and metallurgical sophistication. They suggest that this region was one of significant innovation and export of Bronze Age technology. Illustrations, many in color, show the process of discovery at the site as well as the major pieces" (Publisher's blurb). What is most impressive about Ban Chiang ceramics is that it had three distinct periods that show gradual yet continual progress and eventual mastery of the technology and its artistic possibilities. The development is seen in very few other Pre-Historic cultures of the world, which tended to be static. An absolute "must-have" title for Thailand art and artifact collectors. This title is a late-modern art monograph classic. This is one of very few copies of the Exhibition Monograph still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Very Good"). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of black-and-white and color plates. A fine copy. ISBN 0812278712. no.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. First edition. Octavo. xxiii, (1), 591, (1)pp. Indices and 26 page bibliography. Vertically divided blue & dark gray spine strip lettered in white with photo illustrated front cover. Illustrated with color facsimiles of historical documents and photos, mostly from the Ottoman period. A fine, as new copy. In Ordinary Jerusalem, Angelos Dalachanis, Vincent Lemire and thirty-five scholars depict the ordinary history of an extraordinary global city in the late Ottoman and Mandate periods. Utilizing largely unknown archives, they revisit the holy city of three religions, which has often been defined solely as an eternal battlefield and studied exclusively through the prism of geopolitics and religion. At the core of their analysis are topics and issues developed by the European Research Council-funded project "Opening Jerusalem Archives: For a Connected History of Citadinité in the Holy City, 18401940." Drawn from the French vocabulary of geography and urban sociology, the concept of citadinité describes the dynamic identity relationship a city's inhabitants develop with each other and with their urban environment. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. First edition. Thick octavo. xxi, (1) 934pp. Index. Text in German. Dark blue boards lettered in white and lighter blue. A fine, as new copy. In Objektiver und absoluter Geist nach Hegel. Kunst, Religion und Philosophie innerhalb und au?erhalb von Gesellschaft und Geschichte, challenging Hegelianism?s current tendency to reduce absolute spirit to objective spirit, Thomas Oehl and Arthur Kok offer an extensive selection of papers exploring the wide spectrum of Hegel's philosophy of spirit from the viewpoint of the distinction between objective and absolute spirit (art, religion and philosophy) and their relation to society and history, thereby addressing the universal issue about whether there are cultural phenomena which transcend society and history anew from a Hegelian perspective.
