'Schooten's first independent work was a study of the Kinematic generation of conic sections (1646). In an appendix he treated the reduction of higher-order binomial irrationals to the form x + √y in cases where this is possible, using a development of a procedure of Stifel's. An interesting problem that Schooten considered was how to construct a cyclic quadrilateral of given sides, one of which is to be the diameter - a problem that Newton later treated in the lectures on Arithmetica universalis (Mathematical Papers, V, 162181). After the death of his father in 1645, Schooten took over his academic duties. He also worked on a Latin translation of Descartes's Géométrie. Although Descartes was not completely satisfied with Schooten's version (1649), it found a broad and receptive audience by virtue of its more carefully executed figures and its full commentary. It was from Schooten's edition of the Géométrie that contemporary mathematicians lacking proficiency in French first learned Cartesian mathematics. Schooten possessed an excellent knowledge of the mathematics of both his own time and earlier periods. Besides being an extraordinarily industrious and conscientious scholar, a skillful commentator, and an inspiring teacher, he was a man of rare unselfishness. He recognized his own limitations and did not seek to overstep them. Fascinated by the personality and ideas of Descartes, he worked hard to popularize the new mathematics; his highly successful efforts assured its triumph. (DSB). This copy stems from the library of Jacques Aguste (II) de Thou, Baron de Meslay, Ambassador to the Netherlands, and 'Président aux Enquêtes', with his gilt arms on covers.

Descartes' Geometria, with brief notes by de Beaune (16011652; French mathematician) and commentary by van Schooten. Frans van Schooten (16151660) was introduced to Descartes in 1632. Their first cooperation is dated a few years later when Descartes asked van Schooten to make the illustrations for "La Géométrie" (1637), the first work to propose the idea of uniting algebra and geometry into a single subject which invented an algebraic geometry called analytic geometry. Van Schooten was one of the earliest and most important people to promote the Cartesian geometry. [Tchemetzine IV, 305., Wolf 196., Honeyman 858.] With: Descartes, René Musicae Compendium. Printer's device on title page, with numerous woodcut illustrations of diagrams, figures and sheet music. Descartes wrote this study on music in 1618 but it was first published only after a year of his death. During his service in the army Descartes met Isaak Beeckman (15881637) the Dutch philosopher and scientist who introduced him into problems in mechanics and acoustics. The result of their meeting was this eassay "Musicae Compendium", a treatise on music and a study in methodology. The German music theorist Hugo Riemann declared this work to be "among the ablest musical writings of its time". Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. The First Published Work on Probability Theory. First edition of Huygens' De ratiociniis in aleae ludo, the first printed treatise on probability. ?Having heard in Paris about Pascal?s work in probability problems, Huygens (1629-95) himself took up their study in 1656. This resulted in the Tractatus de ratiociniis ?, a treatise that remained the only book on the subject until the eighteenth century. In his first theorems Huygens deduced that the ?value of a chance,? in the case where the probabilities for a and b are to each other as p:q, is equal to (pa + qb) / (p + q). He thus introduced as a fundamental concept: the expectation of a stochastic variable rather than the probability of a process (to put it in modem terms). Subsequent theorems concern the fair distribution of the stakes when a game is broken off prematurely. The treatise closes with five problems, the last of which concerns expected duration of play? (DSB). ?If one looks on the first calculations of a probability by Cardan and by Galileo as unimportant and says that the real begetter of the calculus of probabilities is he who first put it on a sound footing, then we should pass over not only Cardan and Galileo but also Pascal and Fermat. For although Fermat, if provoked, could have done as much and more than his successors, yet the fact remains that his contribution was in effect the extension of the idea of the exhaustive enumeration of the fundamental probability set, which had already been given by Galileo. The scientist who first put forward in a systematic way the new propositions evoked by the problems set to Pascal and Fermat, who gave the rules and who first made definitive the idea of mathematical expectation was Christianus Huygens? (David, p. 110). ?It was not until the tremendous researches of the 1690-1710 period which resulted in Essai d'Analyse sur les Jeux de Hasard (Montmort, 1708), Ars Conjectandi (James Bernoulli, 17l3), Calcul des Chances, ? la statistique g?n?rale, ?la statistique des d?c?s et aux rentes viag?res (Nicholas Struyck, 1713), and Doctrine of Chances (Abraham de Moivre, 1718), that Huygens' work was superseded, and then not entirely since James Bernoulli incorporated it in the Ars Conjectandi? (ibid., pp. 115-116). Huygens? treatise first appeared as an appendix to van Schooten?s Exercitationum, which comprises five treatises, each with their own title-page, on various mathematical subjects. This was van Schooten?s principal original work. ?Book I contains elementary arithmetic and geometry problems ? Book II is devoted to constructions using straight lines only and Book III to the reconstruction of Apollonius? Plane Loci on the basis of hints given by Pappus. Book IV is a revised version of van Schooten?s treatment of the kinematic generation of conic sections, and Book V is a collection of individual problems. Worth noting, in particular, is the restatement of Hudde?s method for the step-by-step building-up of equations for angular sections and the determination of the girth of the folium of Descartes: x3 + y3 = 3axy. Also noteworthy is the determination of Heronian triangles of equal perimeter and equal area (Roberval?s problem) according to Descartes?s method (1633)? (ibid.). RBH lists only one copy since Macclesfield, and that in a modern binding. Around 1564, Girolamo Cardano composed a work on probability entitled Liber de ludo aleae (?Book on Games of Chance?), but this was not published until 1663 as part of his Opera. Some time between 1613 and 1623, Galileo wrote about die-throwing problems but this remained unpublished until the 20th century. Italian writers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, notably Pacioli, Tartaglia, and Cardano, had discussed the problem of the division of a stake between two players whose game was interrupted before its close (the so-called ?Problem of Points?). The problem was proposed to Pascal and Fermat, probably in 1654, by the gambler Chevalier de M?r? The ensuing correspondence between the two men is generally regarded as fundamental to the development of modern concepts of probability, but it was not published until 1679, in Fermat?s Varia opera mathematica (some of Pascal?s work on probability also appeared in his Trait? du triangle arithmetique of 1665). ?Huygens visited Paris for the first time in the autumn of 1655. He met Roberval and Mylon, a friend of Carcavi [secretary of the National Library of France under Louis XIV and a prolific correspondent with the leading mathematicians of the time], but did not meet Carcavi and Pascal. According to himself he heard about the probability problems discussed the year before but was not informed about the methods used and the solutions obtained. This sounds odd in view of the fact that Roberval was fully informed about the Pascal-Fermat correspondence; however, Roberval does not seem to have been much interested in probability theory. On his return to Holland Huygens solved the problems, and in April 1656 he sent van Schooten his manuscript of the treatise. At the same time he wrote to Roberval and asked for his solution of the most difficult problem (Proposition 14) in the treatise for comparison with his own. Van Schooten proposed that Huygens' treatise would be published at the end of his Exercitationum Mathematicarum, which he was preparing for publication. This would require a translation of the treatise into Latin, and after some discussion van Schooten offered to do this himself. ?In the meantime, since Roberval did not answer his letter, Huygens wrote to Mylon who, through Carcavi, sent the problem on to Fermat. In a letter from Fermat to Carcavi and from him to Huygens (22 June 1656), Fermat gave the solution without proof, a solution which to Huygens? satisfaction agreed with his own. Furthermore, Fermat posed five problems to Huygens, which Huygens immediately solved. He sent the solutions to Carcavi on 6 July and asked him to inform Mylon, Pascal, and Fermat to determine whether thei.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. THE GREATEST FRENCH MATHEMATICIAN OF THE 16TH CENTURY. First collected edition, rare, of the mathematical writings of Fran?ois Vi?te (1540-1603), the greatest French mathematician of the sixteenth century, who was ?the first extensively to use letters of the alphabet to represent numerical quantities? (Hutchinson?s Dictionary of Scientific Bibliography, p. 690), and ?the first mathematician of his age to think occasionally as mathematicians habitually think today? (Bell, p. 99). Vi?te used letters ?both for known ? and for unknown quantities? and ?this innovation, considered one of the most significant advances in the history of mathematics, prepared the way for the development of algebra? (DSB); it earned him the sobriquet ?the father of algebra? (ibid.). Vi?te?s Isagoge in artem analyticam, the earliest work on symbolic algebra, opens the present edition and is followed by 15 further tracts on algebra, numerical analysis, geometry, trigonometry, and the newly adopted Gregorian calendar, the last of which include three volvelles (here bound in uncut on a separate sheet). Vi?te developed ?the systematic application of syncopated algebra to the solution of geometric problems? and thus is widely considered to have paved the way for Ren? Descartes?s invention of analytic geometry. The young Isaac Newton carefully worked through a copy of the Opera when he was studying in Cambridge (Whiteside, p. 21), and this influenced his own work on algebra and analytic geometry. The Opera was edited by the influential Leiden University mathematician Frans van Schooten (1615-60), who numbered among his students the young Christiaan Huygens. Schooten later (1659-61) published an important edition of Descartes?s G?om?trie with explanatory notes, along with several treatises of his own and his students. The idea of printing an edition of Vi?te?s works was suggested to the Elzevirs by Marin Mersenne in 1638, and the proposed work was advertised in 1640 (in the first number of the Catalogus Universalis), but it did not appear until six years later because of the difficulties which Schooten experienced in finding copies of the individual works, which were already rare less than fifty years after their publication. All of them are virtually unobtainable today in their original printings, and the present volume is therefore the closest a modern collector can hope to approach the original writings of Vi?te. The Opera includes all of Vi?te?s published writings, with the exception of the Canon triangulorum (1579) ? Schooten misinterpreted a remark of Vi?te?s which seemed to imply that the tables were inaccurate and so chose to omit the work ? and the semi-popular Principes de Cosmographie (1637). Vi?te?s principal astronomical treatise, the Harmonicum coeleste, which inspired many of his other works, remains unpublished today. ?Vi?te?s initial goal in his mathematical work was the development and improvement of geometric models for calculations in planetary astronomy. Delambre gave the right perspective when he wrote in his 1819?Histoire de l?Astronomie du Moyen Age?that Vi?te ?was not an astronomer, but he was the greatest geometer of his time? Like Ptolemy, Vi?te considered geometry to provide the theoretical foundation for astronomical calculations, and through his trigonometric investigations he found a way to create an algebra for geometry that surpasses traditional numerical algebra in its flexibility, generality, and utility. In the process of creating this new algebra, Vi?te gave algebra a grounding in Euclid?s Elements and he renovated geometric analysis through the algebrization of the transformational rules of Euclidean geometry? (Oaks, pp. 296-7). Schooten organised Vi?te?s treatises by topic: the first four are algebraic, then the one treatise on numerical solution of equations, followed by eight geometrical works, and concluding with three on the calendar. We give the titles of the individual works as they originally appeared, which sometimes differ slightly from their titles in the Opera. The volume opens with In artem analyticum isagoge (pp. 1-12), first published at Tours in 1591, ?a text in which Vi?te proposed nothing short of a complete refashioning of algebra as it was then understood ? Rather than viewing algebra merely as the search for solutions of particular equations, he understood it as the analysis of an actual theory of equations? (Katz & Parshall, pp. 236-237). ?The most important of Vi?te?s many works on algebra ? [It] introduced the use of letters both for known quantities, which were denoted by the consonants B, C, D, and so on, and for unknown quantities, which were denoted by the vowels. Furthermore, in using A to denote the unknown quantity x, Vi?te sometimes employed A quadratus, A cubus . to represent x2, x3, . This innovation, considered one of the most significant advances in the history of mathematics, prepared the way for the development of algebra? (DSB). ?If this seems reminiscent in principle of our modern notation of x, y, and z for unknowns and a, b, c, etc. for indeterminate magnitudes, a convention which we owe to Ren? Descartes in the seventeenth century, it is important to recognize that Vi?te?s symbols or ?species?, unlike ours, carried explicit geometrical meaning. They had dimension, and only expressions of the same dimension were commensurate ? To Vi?te?s way of thinking, then, the addition of a one-dimensional unknown A to a one-dimensional indeterminate B was denoted simply by A + B (we would write x + b), but in two dimensions, the sum appeared as A square + B plane (or our x2 + b) and in three dimensions as A cube + B solid (or our x3 + b)? (Katz & Parshall, pp. 238-239). Perhaps the most important part of the work is chapter 4, in which ?he presents a mode of calculation carried out completely in terms of ?species? of numbers and calls it logistice speciosa ? in contrast with calculation using determinate numbers, which is logistice numerosa. Of significan.
