Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Jenae [Jena] & Arnstadii [Arnstadt], Leipzig: Litteris Caspari Freyschmidii [Caspar Freyschmidt] for Johannis Bartholom. Oehleri, Bipl., 1661. Quarto (20.5cm); contemporary parchment; [x],1-190,215-1010,10011-10026 [i.e. 1011-1026],301-340,[14],14,[48]pp. (collated, erratically paginated but complete); engraved title page by Paravincius, one foldout of "De notis in manu" ("the notes of the hand"); woodcut palmistry and metoposcopy figures throughout. Manuscript title fading at head of spine with some label residue beneath; chipping with exposure along fore-edge of front board; brief split to vellum at front joint between third and fourth threads; general smudging to surface. Board visible through top corner of front pastedown from likely bookplate removal. Pages toned with mild to moderate foxing and offsetting; a few brief marginal chips not touching text; manuscript pen notes in Latin on rear flyleaf verso. A sweeping compendium of works on chiromancy (palmistry) and metoposcopy (forehead-wrinklery), Ludicrum chiromanticum (The Palmistry Entertainment) collects Praetorius' own scholarship on the subject with other major works by Robert Fludd, Balthasar Summer & Samuel Kelner, Caspar Schott, and Nicolaus Pompeius, complete with numerous diagrams and a fantastic engraved title page by Johann-Baptist Paravicini. Praetorius - Hans Shultze to his friends - was an occasional lecturer and full-time scholar, known as a great compiler of folklore, legend, and superstition. The Brothers Grimm praised his "perspicacious erudition" and called him their "most significant written source," and his Blockes-Berges Verrichtung (1668) on the witches' sabbath at Mount Brocken informed the Walpurgisnacht scenes in Goethe's Faust. Praetorius died during a plague outbreak in Leipzig in 1680. Thirty-ish copies found in OCLC but only a hand's-worth in North America. 10 Bl., 433 S., 7 Bl. The clean full parchment volumehas a few small scratches on the back cover; the last few pages have minimal worm marks on the upper edge. Otherwise a very good, fresh, apparently unread copy. Very good copy. More photos on the homepage of the Antiquarian (please include item number on the supply side in the search box).

Würzburg, J. Hertz für W. M. Endter, Nürnberg, 1687. 4°, 19 statt 20 Bl., 1044 S., 6 Bll., Kupfertitel, gest. Porträt und 59 (17 gefalt.) Kupfertafeln, Schweinsldr. d.Zt. mit 2 Schließen; wenige Wurmlöcher in Buchdeckel; feines Expl. Second edition of the famous collection of technical experiments, including v. Guericke's celebrated experiments on vacuums at Magdeburg. With engr. title, portrait and 59 engraved plates! Little browning and foxing, brownish stain to outer margin of 2nd part, notice of dedication to title page; plate 16 of 1st part with small torn away corner, some tears to folding plate 17; lacking the half-title. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with 2 brass clasps; some worming to covers. This famous encyclopedia of technical knowledge is especially important for its description of Otto von Guericke's fundamentally important experiments with the vacuum-pump and the celebrated Magdeburg Hemispheres, illustrated in a fine folding plate. The first book with 29 chapters "Mirabilia Magdeburgica" (pp.1-86,7 plates) is entirely devoted to the description of Guericke's experiments communicated to Schott in Letters, some of which are published here for the first time in the first edition 1664. Guericke did not published his famous book before 1672. Other subjects are treated as follows: Robert Boyle's experiment with the air pump. Toricelli's and others' experiments with mercury vacua; hydro-pneumatique experiments; mechanical marvels; secret writing; problems in cyclometry; the treatise "Mirabilia chronometrica" gives the first description of a universal joint and a classification of gear teeth" (Norman); perpetual motion,; miscellaneous marvels. The volume also contains one of the earliest accounts of the DIVING BELL with a fine engraved plate. This work is furthermore an interesting bridge between the new scientific knowledge of the time, and ancient lore, by virtue of its section on cabalistic writing and astrology. Caspar Schott (1608-66) Jesuit, student and assistant of Athanasius Kircher. During the last years of his life he decided to publish the mass of material he had collected on scientific subjects both from his own researches and those of others. He produced in a period of eight years (1658-1666) eleven books. He taught mathematics and physics at Mainz and Würzburg. He ".yearned for the intellectual delights of Rome, and after twenty-five years in Italy he suffered from German winters and had to have his own hypocaust installed.Exhausted, it is said, by overwork on his books, he died in 1666." DSB XII,211 "Encumbered by Schott's taste for the supernatural, his works contain much useful knowledge, descriptions of scientific instruments and mechanical technology. In the appendix to Librum VI on the pages 427-477 we find the reprint of Athanasius Kircher's "Specula Melitensis Encylica" and in the Librium VII on the pages 482-579 Kircher's "Polygraphia Nova et Universalis, Ex Combinatoria Arte Detecta".
